STEAM TEAM

BWL 1st Step Program

Back and in full swing with T3 partnership is the BWL 1st Step Program. The Board of Water & Light's 1st STEP - or the School to Training and Employment Program -- gives Lansing-area high school seniors a work-based learning experience and an opportunity to obtain the skills to enter the workforce. 1st STEP has graduated nearly 150 students, hired more than 20 full-time employees, and awarded over $225,000 in scholarship funds since 2008. The program also received the Capitol Area Michigan Works Prosperity Award in 2014. The recent pandemic limited our partnership in the past, but with a renewed BWL energy, this program is back. BWL staff Dawn Plenar and Audrey Slavin assisted our volunteers by providing specialized training and documentation to our volunteers. Thanks to all 12 CAMW staff and partner volunteers who assisted with 14 interviews to make this a successful learning experience for each student. We hope to partner again in the future. Shout out to volunteers Steenah Bedford, Erin McKenzie, Hauwa Abbas, Jay LaNew, Skeeter Parsons,John Adams, DJ Grubaugh, Micah Hefty, Dar Baker, and Robert Ramon.

First Step Student in Action

The Lansing Board of Water and Light (BWL) held a reverse job fair. Attending this event was necessary for the T3 program to learn more about the departments and available careers within BWL. T3 Education Officer will use the information for in-class activities with students during career exploration classes. A fun way to share diverse opportunities with our future workforce.
