Actividade Prática de Desenvolvimento Curricular - Vertente Investigação (2019)
This course provides the students with a first contact with the practice of scientific research.
Its main goal is to give the students a chance to apply the knowledge they acquired throughout their studies to solving concrete research problems, and this way learn by doing.
It comprises the solution of a research problem, and write-up of a report describing the problem, the approach, and the results of the work.
The concrete research problem to be addressed will be defined by the supervisor's proposal.
The solution of concrete research problems under the guidance of the proposal's supervisor will enable students to get some exposure to research topics and learn the basics of research methods.
The autonomous research work, supervised by a member of the faculty, enable the students to apply the knowledge they acquired throughout their studies to solving concrete research problems, and this way learn by doing.
Writing a final report summarizing the problem, the approach, and the results of their research, enable the students to practice and receive constructive feedback in order to improve their ability to write, to synthesize, and the capture the essence of their work, and to describe complex problems and solutions at an adequate abstraction level.
The advisor(s) of the student, two advisors of other projects, as well the coordinator of the course, will evaluate the work carried out and the report written by the student, according to the following criteria, with equal weight:
1. Quality of the work and level of scientific contribution.
2. Maturity and independence in solving research problems.
3. Prior knowledge and ability to apply them to their research.
4. Whether the proposal's initial (or adjusted) goals were met.
5. Quality of the report: writing quality and ability to capture the essence of the work and describe it at the right abstraction level.
