The Role of the School Counselor
School counselors are certified and licensed educators who improve student success for all students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. School counselors focus on three domains of student development: (a) career, (b) academic, and (c) social-emotional. School counselors offer a variety of services to students including individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom lessons.
School Counseling Services
Individual Counseling
I might see a student for individual counseling due to reoccurring problems or topics that are too sensitive to discuss in a larger setting. A student may come to me for individual counseling by self-referral. A parent or teacher may also request that we see a student by completing a School Counseling Referral Form.
Group Counseling
Counseling groups offer a unique opportunity for students to discuss common challenges and work together to find solutions. Groups like this also offer support – letting students know that they aren’t the only one experiencing these challenges. Topics for groups may include:
Academic Success/Study Skills
Friendship
Social Skills
Changing Families
Grief/Bereavement
Anxiety
Classroom Lessons
Classroom lessons are an important component of the School Counseling Program because they impact all students at the school. Classroom lessons will include topics that promote academic success and student mental health and wellbeing. Students will also explore their own interests and learn about related careers.
