Here are some spelling rules for tion, sion, and ssion:
***If there is a closed syllable before the /shun/

- the vowel is followed by a consonant: use tion OR -sion (spelling options)
- the vowel is followed by a /sh/ sound use ssion
- the vowel is followed by an /ish/ sound - use tion OR ssion
***If there is an open syllable before the /shun/
