Unit 6 Week 3: Open syllable exceptions: 'a' and 'i' = schwa

This week we will continue to practice open syllable exceptions

Spelling

  • 'a' sounds like short /u/ when used as an open syllable at the beginning or end of a word (example: Alaska)
  • "i" sounds like short /u/ when used in an open syllable in the middle, next to a consonant: (example: an i mal)
  • 'i' sounds like long /e/ when used in an open syllable in the middle, next to a vowel (example: cham pi on)


Complete the practice worksheets. You can write the words and MARK-UP on a piece of paper, or print out the worksheet.
