👀IMPORTANT Reminder👀
At the beginning of our course, you watched a video about how the Google Classroom is our class binder. This means you will use our Google Classroom to do all of your writing steps for this essay.Â
Your graphic organizer and your entire typing process for the essay are required to be completed in the documents provided for you in Google Classroom ONLY. Do NOT type or draft any of your writing process outside of the Google Classroom. Copying/pasting is not allowed in any part of your organizer or essay.
In this writing unit, you will learn to evaluate arguments. The activities in this lesson will show you how to analyze arguments and evidence used in argumentative writing.
Your job will be to compare two author's arguments on a topic of your choice, and then to play "judge" and show which author provided the strongest argument.Â
The prompt in Edgenuity refers to choosing two articles on the topic of universal healthcare, but I strongly encourage you to choose a topic that interests you and to choose to articles on your own topic.
Please watch my recording, which provides an explanation and overview of this essay before you get started. 👉👉👉

Health care costs in the United States are on the rise. Some people say that a universal health care system would bring costs down and increase access to care. Others say it would be too expensive and would reduce the quality of care. Use your school's databases to find one editorial from each of the argument. An editorial is an opinion article written by a professional with an authority on the topic. Editorials can be written by a member of the publication's editorial board or a professional from within the field. Look for reputable websites and sources to conduct your research. Then, write a five-paragraph essay in which you compare and contrast each author's argument in terms of objectivity and the types of evidence presented. Evaluate and explain how the sources use effective evidence to support their claims. Refer to use of appeals to audience, validity of claims and logic, and other rhetorical elements in your comparison. Cite the resources you used in your essay to avoid plagiarism.Â
*REMINDER:Â
You do NOT have to choose articles on the topic of universal health care! The topic is not important. What is important is that you evaluate two articles on opposing sides of the same topic-- whatever that topic may be. You are more than welcome to find your own two opposing articles (on any topic) or use the ones I've pre-selected (linked below).
You are invited to find opposing articles on the same topic on your own using either ProCon.org or the Gale Databases (pw: calpac).Â
However, if you'd like to use pre-assigned and pre-selected sources from which to create your compare/contrast analysis, you may use the samples from our lesson in Edgenuity: Editorials in Favor & in Opposition

Here are a couple of other opposing article options for you to choose from:

Your essay should demonstrate knowledge of critical reading, analysis of rhetorical devices, evaluation based on cited relevant examples from the text, and organization in compare/contrast pattern.
Review the criteria for demonstration of proficiency for this essay here. Your essay will be assessed based on which level of the rubric describes your written submission.
The essays below were submitted by students who completed this course in the past. You may preview them to orient yourself to the correct focus and organization of this essay. Each sample used the universal healthcare topic and articles provided in the course, but I encourage you to construct a similar essay using any topic with two clear sides and articles opposing each other (please watch my recording above if you haven't already!). You will be provided instruction on and access to outline templates that will help you to organize your thoughts as these students have throughout this unit.
For the essay in this lesson, I will take a position on whether I agree with universal healthcare in America. I will prove my opinion using researched material and will convince my audience to agree with my position.
For the essay in this lesson, I will compare and contrast two assigned editorials in this lesson (that can be on ANY topic, not just universal healthcare). I will evaluate what types of evidence each editorial uses, how strong each argument is, and show my reader which of the two editorials is stronger and why.
