At the beginning of the 2018 - 2019 school year, all Cajon Valley Middle Schools will be in full implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS Integrated Model). The middle schools have been part of a gradual 4 year shift.

All teachers in CV are highly encouraged to continue to attend professional development provided by their own and other local districts and to take the learning to their schools as they explore with colleagues the daily practices of NGSS.

The focus should be on grasping and applying the shifts of NGSS (as we currently do not have a NGSS curriculum) most especially the phenomena-based approach, and the emphasis on the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) as part of the three dimensional learning.

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have the ability to transform teaching and learning in the classroom. They dramatically change how students experience science by shifting the focus from the memorization of facts to greater student engagement in the processes of science. The NGSS emphasizes learning in three dimensions: the Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas. In addition, there are seven Conceptual Shifts, or Innovations, that have strong implications for teaching and learning. These shifts include the interconnected nature of science as practiced in the real world, the integration of science and engineering, the use of performance expectations, a focus on deeper understanding of content as well as application of content, and alignment to the Common Core State Standards.
