Outcomes of the DEEP Program

Objectives

Cabrillo Dual Enrollment faculty will experience a college version of a teacher training program. They will gain a better understanding and action plan to implement relevant learning activities into their curriculum. They begin exploring the self in relation to others experiences as a higher education student, then learn about today’s high school and prospective college students. We will explore our teaching philosophies and slowly refine them to connect to our newly found practices. They will learn and implement a holistic approach to teaching and learning with the goal of offering belongingness, inclusivity and transformative learning experiences to high school students. The goal is to support faculty in diverse ways of approaching teaching and in relation to how we learn, and inspire students to continue on in their educational journeys.

DEEP Facilitator

Joy Polanco O'Neil, PhD (jooneil@cabrillo.edu)

As a first-generation Mexican-Polish-Ukranian American and first-generation graduate, college seemed intangible and yet, I was thirsty for it!  I recall looking at a catalog and wondering where to even begin. What are these course acronyms such as ENG101? How do I know what to take and in what order? How do I enroll? How do I afford it? Who do I ask for help? While I lost the opportunity to start at a 4-year college due to my lack of knowledge of “how it works”, I was fortunate that 2-year college found me! It was my destiny to be a collegiate athlete, with time to work, and get the resources, inspiring professors, and support needed to succeed. My story is not unique.

With this, I am thrilled to be a part of this new Dual Enrollment teacher training vision on how to support and teach students with similar beginnings to my own. The new program is called, the Dual Enrollment Educatior Prep Program (DEEP). It will be designed to offer Cabrillo College Dual Enrollment faculty an opportunity to learn about best practices in teaching for high school-aged students entering college. Our goal is to ensure faculty are equipped to support high school-aged students from diverse and underrepresented populations with the knowledge, skills, and inspiration to thrive and connect all learners to the pathways that propel them from where they are to where they aspire to be.

Program Includes: 2-Day Colloquium

The program kicks off with a 2-day in-person colloquium from 9 am - 3 pm before the fall term begins. Inquire with the TLC for the exact times and dates of the next offering.

Food is provided for breakfast and lunch. 1/2 day will be in Wastonville and other days in Aptos Campus in the TLC.

Program Includes: Peer Coaching Sessions

In the Fall term, participants will engage in peer coaching sessions optional in-person or via Zoom. A peer coaching model is a form of learning and development about dual enrollment pedagogies where several colleagues work together with the facilitator to reflect on current teaching practices and the application and results of new practices. We teach one another, share ideas, and problem-solve with the aim of dual enrollment persistence. The meetings are generally one hour in duration. Times and dates are chosen by the participants and agreed upon collectively.

Cabrillo Dual Enrollment

The program addresses dual enrollment of individual high school students taking courses at Cabrillo. Here is a list of those courses commonly taken by dua enrollment students.
