Welcome Year 7

Summer School Exemplar Work

Below are some amazing examples of work completed during summer school 2021.

Students got use the brand new kitchen facilities to bake beautiful cupcakes. Ms Girling was super impressed with the engagement and patience of the students while the cakes were baking. Their level of creativity and attention to detail is plain to see when decorating the cakes.

Japanese Notan Designs

Music

Students have been playing with Boomwhacker tubes to play along to tunes. This track gets quicker and quicker at the end. Teamwork was definitely key here!

Maths Fun

In maths over summer school the boys were taught about number patterns and how they can be visualised. This video (https://youtu.be/qhbuKbxJsk8) explains how it works. We gave the broad name of "cardioid" to the activity, in reality only the heart shape curve is called a cardioid... think cardiology or cardiac. Times tables are a form of number pattern, and by using a circle with points on the circumference we can visualise the number pattern or times table with astonishingly beautiful results.

Origami is the art of paper folding, which is often associated with Japanese culture. In modern usage, the word "origami" is used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin.

Students have created a box cuboid shape from smaller folds. Very tricky actions, with lots of patience needed.

Gladiator Trials

Sam Learning Challenge

Students have been working very hard this week to complete SAM Learning challenges in Maths, English and Science. There have been some excellent scores and very fierce competition. between all the groups taking part.

A huge well done to everyone for taking part and trying your best.

You are a Champion

Students have been working through activities based on the Marcus Rashford book, "You are a Champion". Tasks include thinking about what is success to them and what traits a champion has, also looking at target setting and how to do this effectively.

All students will be given a copy of the book in September to read.

Inter Tree Football

Students to finish off the week took part in an Inter Tree Football competition. Everyone who participated had fun, even with the wet grass. Yellow team emerged victorious.

Huge congratulations to all the players.

CSI Summer School

The final activity of the week was CSI summer school. Solving a celebrity murder mystery using scientific techniques such as chromatography, soil sampling and chemical testing. Can they crack the case?

Student Testimonials

My Bullers Wood Experience - Aureliano Y8

Bullers Wood School for Boys has been a fantastic experience so far. The staff and assistants have a positive attitude towards all areas of learning which help all the students stay happy. An example of this is through lunchtime or after school clubs. These can range from extra-curricular to further core learning.

All the teachers find innovative and creative ways to teach. This keeps all learning fun and exciting, like in my History class my teacher made us recreate the Battle of Hastings and we had to make swords, shields and helmets I thoroughly enjoyed the topic because it helped us think about the types of formations and weaponry they would have used in the 11th century.

Furthermore, I have formed many new friendship groups which has helped me gain confidence at school. I think this is a major part of school life as it helps gain social skills in the real world, therefore, making you think and make good decisions. The school also teaches you how to be resilient, acceptable and mature young men. I would definitely recommend Bullers Wood School for Boys as every teacher and assistant feels that everybody deserves to achieve success within a culture of values of courtesy and respect.

"Bullers Wood School for Boys is exciting and dynamic; watching the students grow and develop as the school evolves makes this a unique school and community to be a part of. " Mrs Willis - Head of Science

My Day at School - Jack Y8

The alarm goes off, finally the day has arrived. I'm shivering, is it the cold, nerves, or excitement? I get on the bus with my twin brother and my Dad. Its still so early, much earlier that I would normally get up.

At the start of the day we were shown around and we had form time. We are given our timetables and started to get to know each other. At break I tried to hang around with Charlie (a friend I had made at "Really Wild School" over the summer holidays) but he was talking to people I didn't know, so I felt uncomfortable. I decided to go to my brother who was talking to several people and I joined in. I felt more welcome here, so I stayed. These are people I now call friends. It was time to go to lessons.

At lunch time I lined up to get food with Charlie and we ate together. When other people came and sat down next to us, I moved back to my brother because he was the only person I truly knew. It just goes to show that the people you talk to on your first day are friends you stick with, but you make lots of other friends along the way.

"This is my first year teaching at Bullers Wood but I have already decided that this will be my forever school" Mrs Krige - Maths

My Journey from Y7 to Y8 - Liam Y8

The start of my Y7 was a bit rocky as I lost my Grandad but I had great support from my friends and teachers and settled in well soon after. My journey so far has been a positive one, even through lockdown, as the teachers kept in touch and ensured that I did not fall behind on my school work. This school makes you feel safe and encouraged to do well. The positive points make you feel like you want to push harder to do better.

When we are all in the same building, I'm hoping to set up an Art club for Y7's and for anyone who feels by themselves. It is easy to get stressed and overwhelmed or to feel marginalised from other students like you don't fit in. I'm hoping that something like an Art club will bring together any student that feels this way. I am excited for the new building and especially for the new Music rooms so I can practice my Piano.

Overall, my journey at Bullers Wood School for Boys has been good, my confidence has grown and I'm looking forward to good times to come.

BWSfB Analysis - Chris Y8

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, we try our best. Coming to school is a pleasure and we enjoy it. I'm a sporty guy, so if you enjoy your sports, then this is the review for you. But first talking about academics. At BWSfB, we have a wide range of different subjects to learn and enjoy. This year, we added Music to all of the different subjects taught at the school. We even study language!

Now for me the most interesting part; PE. In PE (Physical Education, fun fact) we do many different sports. This includes football, cricket, rugby, long jump, table tennis and fitness. These are all the sports I have covered so far.

Knowing that COVID-19 has changed all of our lives to this point in time. To be fair, going back to any school would be a headache and utter chaos, but this school, it's not just the underrated teachers and staff. It's the atmosphere. The others around you. Did I mention the students, they are outstanding. But I advise you - 100% to join our school.

" Never measure your progress with someone else's ruler" Miss Farrell, English Teacher.

Bullers Wood School for Boys - Ronan Y8

Year 7 was a huge step up from primary, there was suddenly double the amount of people and classrooms. My first day was a bit nerve racking because of all the new faces but the teachers greeted us with a smile on their face at the front gate. When I got to the playground I met up with my mates from primary and then a whistle blew and the headteacher told us to line up in form groups. We were told what form we were in on our induction day, so I knew what to do. When we were lined up, she gave us a speech about how delighted she was to have new pupils and wished us well as we went in to our first personal development (PD) lesson. When our name was called, we had to say something interesting about ourselves and how old we are. After that I headed off into my first lesson of the day. The teacher taught us so well as did every other one and explained everything clearly. I had started to get used to it around two or three weeks in and was really enjoying myself. The year flew by but halfway through we started to get wary of a new virus, COVID-19. We were all wondering if the school was going to close and eventually it did.

Working at home was different and weird but the school had set work on SAM learning. A website that had tasks for every subject and was a sort of competition between students as for each task you earned points. It was fun and challenging and I grew more and more fond of it. Something else the school used was google classroom where we could look at the work set, it might be a quiz or working on a power point but it told us what to do and helped us learn even though we were away from learning face to face with a teacher. This whole thing was very new to each of us but it was easy to get our work done and the school was so good at helping us online. There were so many fun challenges to do that the teachers had set to make this weird experience quite enjoyable. After a while though I started to wish I could go back into school and learn properly, effectively and see my friends.

Finally, schools could be open again and I was so happy. It is my fourth week now and the school has hired a lot of new teachers that were just as friendly as the ones that taught me so much in my first year. We had music for the first time and the school had set up boundaries between all years so we could not interact with year nine or year seven. I was so keen to get back learning and to see my friends. After the unusual experience we were not allowed to get too close to each other but even under the circumstances I grew familiar with what I had to do. I was back to learning face to face with a teacher and I am still enjoying myself at Bullers Wood.
