ON THE MAT WITH OLIVIA DALUZ

Big Walnut now has an official girls' wrestling team. The team currently has four girls: Olivia DaLuz, Adah-Mary Darst, Madison Berlin, and Abigail Stewart. The team is always looking for more girls to join; no experience is required.

The team was created to give all girls at Big Walnut the opportunity to wrestle and join a great sport.

Due to the fact there is a limited number of girls on the team, they often travel to Big Walnut Middle School to train with the other three girls there.

Freshman Madison Berlin said, “I wanted to join the team because I watched the boys wrestle and I thought it would just be fun.”

Sophomore Abigail Stewart shared similar feelings about joining: “I joined the team because it's awesome. It gives you a chance to work hard."

Some girls on the team have prior experience in the sport, but other do not. Regardless of their experience, the girls see this as a chance to learn and grow.

Sophomore Adah-Mary Darst said, ”I learned great skills and made new friends, and it’s a great way to stay in shape."

"I love it and can’t wait for other girls to join!” added Darst.

Each girl is improving tremendously as they advance through every match. In terms of goals, each has their own goals, but Stewart said,” My goals for the season are to win every match and win as much as I can."

Middle Schooler, Hope Nicola, pictured above, won 1st place in the 142 weight class, at the Watkins Memorial Tournament. There is clearly a bright future to this new sport.

As a member of this team, I can say that the sport is quite physical. As expected, all of us knew it was not going to be light work. Giving as much effort as I can muster will help me thrive to be the best I can be. Since we have practice six days a week, I feel like I'm improving as each day goes by. I hope to build as much knowledge of the sport as I can.
