A: To us, No-Kill means that we do our absolute best to ensure a live outcome. We consider the animal’s quality of life, community safety, and whether it’s realistic to manage aggressive or difficult behaviors or health conditions in a home without risk to people or other animals.
At Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, we have a responsibility to make safe adoption placement decisions for the people and animals we share our community with. All of the dogs we care for are evaluated as individuals. We gather information about each dog from multiple sources (staff, foster placements, previous guardians, volunteers, etc.). While we evaluate each animal on a case-by-case basis, in general, Brother Wolf will not adopt out dogs who:
Have a damaging bite history towards children or adults.
Do not show warning signs before they attempt to bite.
Have severely injured or killed another dog.
Cannot be safely handled due to aggressive behaviors.
Show offensive aggression towards humans (actively decreasing the distance between themselves and the person they are aggressing towards).
Stalk children in a predatory manner.
Show uninterruptible aggression towards other dogs.
Show poor bite inhibition (degree to which dog moderates tooth contact in the case of a bite).
Cats too are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and, in general, Brother Wolf will not adopt out socialized, indoor “house” cats who show offensive aggression towards humans or who bite without provocation. Brother Wolf has a working cat program to place community/feral cats who have a history of living outdoors.
Bites that are determined to be fluke bites are not considered aggression. Fluke bites are bites by an animal that occur during uncommon circumstances that are not likely to be repeated (e.g. while in acute physical pain, while with puppies during lactation, while under sedation, etc.).
A: We recommend you find a respite foster for your pet while you are out of town. Email foster@bwar.org, and we will help you find a respite foster. If you have a respite foster in mind, just send us an email to let us know when they'll be in someone else's care. DO NOT leave your pet at a boarding facility, a pet sitter, or with someone non-BWAR approved.
A: No! Dog parks are breeding grounds for many, many dog diseases, like Parvo and Rabies. Same for doggy day cares, boarding facilities, and other off-leash public locations. It is also a huge liability, and we don't want to risk any dog fights or other incidents that could cause trauma or harm to the foster pet or to others.
A: Brother Wolf has a veterinarian on staff. If there is an emergency, please call (828) 820-2115 and a member of our medical team will advise you. If you take your foster pet to an outside veterinarian, we will NOT reimburse unless the visit was approved by a member of our medical team.
A: Not at all! Our goals are centered around the safety and happiness of the pet. While finding a forever home for these pets really is the ultimate goal, sometimes the greatest benefit of fostering is just to show the pet some love! Please don't feel that you've failed your pet in any way. If you would like further guidance on tips to market your foster pet, reference this document or email us at foster@bwar.org!
A: We require a minimum 72-hour notice before an animal can return to the Foster Center. This is to ensure we have another foster placement prepared to take them. This is with the exception of serious medical/behavioral situations.
Our pets can not spend the night at the Foster Center.
We place animals in foster care Monday-Friday, using our available space as efficiently as possible. This means that we can not facilitate same-day returns.
Please be sure to plan ahead, and text or email us at 828-222-4705 or foster@bwar.org to schedule a drop off 72 hours in advance.
A: If you are coming for a medical appointment or to drop off your foster pet at the Foster Center, please follow the time of your appointment.
A: Brother Wolf's medical staff is solely responsible for scheduling your animal(s) for their S/N surgery. When your foster pet’s surgery has been scheduled, you will be alerted via email and a drop off appointment time will be requested.
It is of the UTMOST importance that you drop your foster animal off at Brother Wolf when requested.
Your foster pet will need to be picked up after their surgery. Once we receive their paperwork, they will be cleared for adoption and you will receive an email notification that they are now available.
A: Foster programs are not typically pathways to adoption. We thank you for offering your home to pets in need as they transition to their next home. However, we understand that sometimes your foster can burrow their way into your heart. If that's the case, follow the steps below. (Note: Brother Wolf does not adopt out sibling puppies or same-age puppies to one household.)
When picking up your foster pet, you will be given the option to have your foster pet placed "on hold" for 72 hours. This means that your foster pet will not be listed on our website, and we will not accept applications for their adoption. By the end of this 72 hour hold, you will need to inform our Adoptions team of your intent to adopt (at info@bwar.org). If we do not hear from you by the end of this 72 hour hold, they will automatically be available and listed on our website.
If you decide to adopt after you've waived the hold, or after the 72 hour hold is up, you will need to fill out an application for your foster pet and our adoptions team will process this application in the order in which it is received. These applications can be found on www.bwar.org/adopt.
All cats, dogs, and rabbits in our care must be spayed or neutered before they are adopted out. This means that any unaltered animal is not available for adoption. You will have until their spay/neuter surgery to decide on adoption.
Normal adoption fees apply to all foster adoptions:
$300 – Puppies (6 months & under)
$300 – Adult Dogs (under 25 pounds)
$100 – Adult Dogs (over 6 months & over 25 pounds)
$75 – Kittens (6 months & under)
$40 – Adult Cats (over 6 months)
$50 – Rabbits, Ferrets, Chinchillas, Hedgehogs
$10 – Gerbils, Hamsters, Rats, and Guinea Pigs
