The Special Education department is working in close collaboration with IT in order to bring iPads to our special education staff and students. Together we recognize the power of the iPad to provide further opportunities for student engagement during academic, behavioral and therapeutic instruction. We also recognize the impact of the iPad in providing higher quality visual accommodations to our students with visual impairments. With a vision grounded in improving student engagement and improved access to visual accommodations, this project began in August 2018 with a cohort of 16 educators. Special education teachers, teachers of the visually impaired, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists are represented in this cohort. Throughout the 2018-19 school year, this cohort of special educators will help develop a system for using iPads with students with special needs and consider the expansion possibilities that could align with the vision for this work. Together we seek to find the answers to logistic, instructional and technological challenges that have previously impeded the use of iPads with our students with special needs.
