You Can't Always Choose What Happens. You Can Choose How You Respond.
Question #1: What if worship is more than what happens on Sunday?
Question #2: What if worship is not simply something we attend, sing, or participate in—but something we live?
Question #3: And if that is true, what does it mean for Christian athletics?
At Big Valley Christian School, we believe athletics is more than competition. It is an opportunity for students to discover who they are, develop who they are becoming, and learn to use what God has given them for His purposes.
Athletics can be worship in action.
Preparation Can Be Worship
Worship begins before the game ever starts.
It is found in:
· Unseen work
· Preparation
· Discipline
· Learning
· Perseverance.
Preparation becomes worship when we faithfully develop and use the abilities God has given us.
Excellence requires preparation, but our preparation isn't about proving our worth; our worth is already established in Christ.
Character Can Be Worship
The true test of character is often found in moments when we don't get what we want.
How do we as athletes or parents respond when:
Not starting?
An official makes a call we disagree with?
When a teammate makes a mistake?
When we lose?
When we win?
Athletics gives everyone: Coaches, players, parents, thousands of opportunities to practice character.
Respect can be worship.
Encouragement can be worship.
Integrity can be worship.
Forgiveness can be worship.
Serving others can be worship.
The way we treat people is part of the offering we bring to God.
Competition Can Be Worship
Christian athletes don't have to apologize for competing. Competition is good.
We should prepare.
We should work.
We should pursue excellence.
We should want to win.
But the Christian athlete understands that winning is not the foundation of identity.
The scoreboard can tell us who won the game. It cannot tell us who we are.
When identity is secure in Christ, we are free to compete with courage, intensity, and joy—because our value doesn't rise and fall with the final score.
We can compete for the win without worshiping the win.
Adversity Can Be Worship
Perhaps some of the most meaningful moments in athletics don't happen when everything goes according to plan. Injuries, losses, disappointment, failure, conflict and unmet expectations These moments expose what we believe.
God can use difficult circumstances to form us.
· Perseverance can be worship.
· Trust can be worship.
· Getting back up can be worship.
Sometimes the greatest victory an athlete experiences has nothing to do with the scoreboard.
Relationships Can Be Worship
One of the greatest gifts of athletics is that we don't have to do it alone.
· Teammates become friends.
· Coaches become mentors.
· Families become communities.
· Opponents become people we learn to respect.
Christian athletics creates opportunities to live out the "one another" commands of Scripture.
· Encourage one another.
· Serve one another.
· Forgive one another.
· Carry one another's burdens.
Athletics gives us a classroom where those biblical truths become tangible.
Excellence Can Be Worship
Excellence and worship belong together. Colossians 3:23 reminds us:
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord."
Excellence doesn't mean perfection. It means faithfully giving our best with what God has entrusted to us.
Faith becomes visible through Athletics.
We don't simply talk about perseverance: we practice it.
We don't simply teach servant leadership: we experience it.
We don't simply discuss integrity: we are given opportunities to demonstrate it.
We don't simply study what it means to love our neighbor: we stand next to them on a team.
At BVCS, we want athletics to be more than an extracurricular activity.
Building With Purpose.
Worship in Action.
It's all worship.

College Recruiting Corner
But choosing a college is about more than finding a place to play.
Who is going to mentor your child?
Will they encourage and strengthen their faith?
Will they challenge them academically and develop their critical thinking?
Will they help them use athletics as an opportunity to discover their identity in Christ—not in their performance?
Those are questions worth asking before choosing a college.
College athletics can be an incredible opportunity—but the goal isn't simply to find a team.
The goal is to find the right environment for your student-athlete to grow—in faith, academics, character, and competition.
Set up a time to visit with Coach Snelgrove about your potential college athletics opportunities. drews@bvcs.org
Athletes and parents are encouraged to reach out—even if you’re just starting to explore your options.
RECRUITING REMINDER:
Don't choose a college because they recruited you. Choose a college because it is the right fit for you.

Athletic Sports Clearance
Are you considering coming out for a Spring season sport? Before you can participate in tryouts, you must complete the online clearance at Home Campus. Both parents and athlete will need to finish the online application and upload your current sports physical. Don't delay! We don't want you to miss out on participating in Lions athletics.
F.A.Q. (Frequently asked Questions) about Athletic Clearances
Want to play a sport at BVCS?
Complete online information and signatures on homecampus.com
Upload your current (within 1 year) sports physical onto homecampus.com
You do not need to turn in any paperwork to the office. It is all done online.
You will receive an email from Home Campus notifying you that you are cleared.
Home Campus does not alert the Athletic Office when you complete your portion of the clearance process.
Please note that we are the ones who manually mark student-athletes as “cleared.” If you do not receive an email confirming your clearance, that means you're not cleared yet.
If you have any questions or believe there’s an error, feel free to contact michellec@bvcs.org to check on your athlete's clearance status
Student-athletes will not be allowed to participate in tryouts, practices, or games until this information is complete and you are cleared.
Does the clearance from last year still work the next year?
No, it does not carry over
If the sports physical has not expired yet and I uploaded it last year, do I have to upload it again this year?
Yes, we cannot see the previous year's documentation. Each year is separate. You can upload that same physical from the previous school year if it is still valid.
If the sports physical expires mid-season, do we need a new physical?
Yes, we are alerted when it expires, and the athlete cannot continue to participate in any physical activity until a new one has been uploaded.
All the athletes on this wall have played 12 sports in their high school career: 3 sports per year for all 4 years in high school. This award is recognized with a lifetime Lions pass that gets you into all Lions home games for free for life and we put your name on this wall to celebrate you. Being a 12 sport athlete is no small feat and requires dedication to sport and to academics to manage that intense load. We are proud of all our 12 sport award winners and challenge you to be one too!
ATTENTION SENIORS: Graduating seniors especially current/former athletes and those who love sports, the NCOA is looking for officials! Contact Little.A@monet.k12.ca.us for more information.
