Please read and discuss these questions and answers with your child so they understand how the library works.
When do I come to the library?
Students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade come to the library once in the six-day cycle for 46 minutes.
How many books can I check out at one time?
First, second, and third grade students are only permitted to check out one book during each scheduled library class.
Kindergarten students will check out one book every other library class.
When is my library book due?
First, second, and third grade students' books should be returned to the library on their next scheduled library day.
Kindergarten will keep their books for one six day cycle, and return their books to their classroom teachers.
What do I do if I forgot my book on my scheduled library day?
Another library book cannot be checked out until the overdue book is returned.
Please try to return it as soon as possible either in the morning or on the student's next scheduled library day.
Are there fines for overdue library books?
No, but please try to be on time. Printed report cards may be held at the end of the year for all books that have not been returned or paid for by the conclusion of the school year. Overdue notices will be electronically emailed to parents/guardians through our Follett Circulation System after being late for at least two rotations.
What happens if I lose or damage my book?
Any book that is lost or badly damaged must be paid for before another book can be checked out of the library. Please check with Mrs. Petzuk or Ms. Nica for the replacement cost. If paying by check, it must be addressed to "The Burrell School District".
Can I renew a book?
Yes, unless it is a new book in high demand. Please make sure to bring the book back on your library day to renew. The computer needs to know that you want to renew it for another week.
Am I able to check out magazines or DVDs?
Unfortunately, no. Only the Burrell staff has the opportunity to check out these items.
How do I look for a book?
All students may browse the shelves or use one of the mounted iPads to look for a book. You can search the library catalog by subject, title, author, keyword, or series.
Are the students provided with library instruction?
Yes. The 46 minute block of time is divided into a library lesson and book exchange for first, second, and third graders. Normally, 25 to 30 minutes is designated for a lesson and/or reading of a story. Around 15-20 minutes is allocated for the students to select new books. Kindergarten will alternate between a library lesson and story/book checkout.
What is taught to the students in the library?
The lessons focus around information literacy skills, the PA Reading Standards, the Common Core Standards, and classroom curricular units.
Do I have a library card?
Yes! Each student now has his or her very own library ID badges. He or she will use it when checking out his or her book at the self check out station each library class. If a student loses or forgets his or her ID badge they can also enter his/her 5 digit student number when checking out a book.
