Seniors go Into the Wild
By Reece Kennedy
Literature 12 classes took an exciting nature walk with Mr. Thome, Ms. Zoccole, and Mrs. Shaffer on Thursday, May 25th in appreciation for Christopher McCandless and inspired by the novel Into The Wild . While attending the nature walk, students were able to explore on their own and participate in fun activities in the woods surrounding BHS. Students enjoyed the presence of nature and embraced the "wilderness". Mr. Thome explained to the students about your 5 senses but only wanted them to use sight and hearing on this adventure. He continued to say all day, “I love this! I could do this all day.” Mr. Thome set up a water game with students where one student would be blindfolded and would have to try and listen for others trying to sneak up on them. They would then spray in the direction of where they heard the sound hoping to hit the person sneaking up on them. Senior Jaxon Logut said, “I got sprayed for no reason!” Another game Mr. Thome had the students participate in used the sense of sight. Students would partner up and change one thing about their appearance and their partner would guess the change. Credit goes to Ms. Zoccole for coming up with this idea for the students to try and see Chris McCandless’s perspective on how he lived part of his life. Mrs. Zoccole said, “I wanted the Seniors to try and connect with nature.” Getting out and learning about a new environment forces you to grow and learn more about yourself. The Senior nature walk was a success and gave a little more appreciation for Christopher McCandless.

Different Forms of Nature "Into the Wild"
Hannah Thomas discovered this bird nest by accident, but all the students enjoyed the find. Ms. Zoccole at first thought it was a hummingbird's nest. But, later, identified it as a red-eye vireo's nest because she heard one outside her window at school and confirmed both the bird's song and the nest later.
It is amazing how many little treasurers are running through the woods beside the school like this little stream.
It is an interesting perspective on nature when it is viewed close up.
