BHS Hosts Poetry Slam
By Emily Hegedus
Burrell hosted the Third Annual Gifted Poetry Slam on April 19. It was attended by gifted middle and high school students from Franklin Regional, Monessen, and Norwin School Districts. Original poems were to fit the theme of “A Memory," and additional poems could be "Authors' Choice" and be about any topic. Last year's them was “Finding Humor in Everyday Life."
Each writer gave energetic readings of their poems, using only their voice and body movement. No props were permitted. Three students delivered their poems virtually by video. The sponsor of the event, Mrs. Aranyos said, "My favorite poem was the one about mermaids, written by the Norwin High School student. It was just beautiful." One of the volunteers at the event, Burrell student, Junior Ella Freshwater said that there were "great performers" all around.
During the readings, the students rated each other’s work with categories such as "voice," "content," and "movement." Beverages and snacks for the poets to enjoy while they listened were offered as well. Freshwater also said that the organizers were “amazing” and that “it was great to volunteer and see all the talented writers.” At the end of the event the points were tallied and the winners, chosen by their peers, were recognized.
