The Winter Sports Pep Rally had super timing this year because the holiday excitement sprinkled with the blue and white spirit of the assembly. It was held on Friday, December 16 at the end of the school day in the gym. Student Government spent a couple weeks planning the ultimate combo of holiday fun activities and the introduction of winter sports teams. It was literally a race for the trophy with two high stake games that would determine the ultimate ruling class at the end of 2022. The Freshmen had the trophy from their awesome fundraising skills and generosity from the Toy Drive, so they were defending their title after a win in the last two class competitions. Take a look below to get the complete run-down of the pep rally. It was a blast (injury free - whew!) and holiday fun had by all!!!
Seniors Caden Canfield and Quinn Oswalt emceed the pep assembly. They were really able to capture the holiday and Bucco spirit.
Tree Decorating Competition
Each class, created a team of decorators and one person was "the tree". Classes raced to be the first to use all of the decorations and complete their very own human Christmas Tree. The Freshmen appeared to win, but with a decoration malfunction, the Juniors were declared the winners and the Freshmen had to relinquish the trophy.

Winter Sports
Cheerleaders performed their "Go Blue" cheer and was introduced for their Winter Sports season. Varsity cheer has been practicing hard to add more stunts and cheers for the winter season. They are looking forward to cheering the basketball and wrestling teams onto success. Also, Jenna, Karly, Hannah, Rilynn, Mariah, and Mckenna recently joined together to form Burrell's competition team and brought home 2nd place from Belle Vernon. Jenna also took home first place in the tumble off
Captains: Jenna Mitnick & Karly Wass
Girls Basketball: The Lady Bucs started their season off strong with four wins, but faced two defeats. They look forward to the rest of the season and advancing their winning record. Come out and support tonight as they face Cambridge Springs at 7:30.
Captains: Riley Sterlitz, Addy Landowski, & Emily Wojtczak
Boys Basketball Team: As the Boys Basketball Team head into the 2022-2023 season, they anticipate big things. With a young, but talented team, last year’s success is in reach. The Bucs' main goal is a section championship for a good seed in the playoffs. With 1 returning starter, the team looks a lot different. The “Flamethrowers” Macky Bennis and Tucker Bitar lead the charge. Junior big-man, Esau King-Buchak is a strong presence in the paint. Junior sharpshooters Joe Discello and Dylan Mckallip run the wings to make plays. They head to Shadyside tonight for the start of section play. The team would appreciate it if you came to their first home game, December 20, versus Ligonier Valley.
Captains: Esau King-Buchak & Macky Bennis
Swim Team: The team has high hopes this year as last year's WPIAL qualifiers: Chloe Walton, David Matovik, David Aliyetti, Anthony Roman, Braden Mechensy, Kaylee Armando, as well as the other swimmers take on the season. We hope to see their team excel to greatness as they take on their first meet on the 21st. they’ve been destroying the game at practice and plan to eliminate the competition this year!
Captains: David Matovik, David Allyeti, Brayden Menchesney & Kaylee Armando
Bowling Team: The Burrell Bowling team is starting off their season with some amazing scores! The teams are led by captain Leah McCandless. Currently, the boys varsity team is 2-2 and the girls varsity is 3-1. The top scorer from the boys is Sophomore Tucker Bitar with a high score of 234 and an average of 194. Girls top scorer is Junior Leah McCandless with a high score of 221 and an average of 182. The season has just started but there is more to come from the bowling team. Go Bucs!
Captains: Leah McCandless & Victoria Schuller
Boys Hockey Team: The dirty Bucs are off to a strong start at 5-3-1. The Bucs started off the season with a shootout win over the Neshannock Lancers, with sophomore Luke Mink calling game and Connor Kariotis standing on his head. Led by leading scorer Caden Canfield, the Bucs are looking to bring home the first PIHL championship in school history. Show out for the boys Monday when they face 1st place Bishop Canevin and Thursday against Deer Lakes.
Captains: Ryan Scheftic & Caden Canfield
Girls Gymnastics Team: Meet season hasn’t started yet, but good luck to Sophomores Sydney Lawson and Rylie Porter and also Freshman Hailey Brockett and Kendel Fenner at their first meet next week at home! They all look forward to the season and competing at WPIALs in February!
Wrestling: After a sad loss last year in the WPIAL finals, the Burrell Bucs are out for revenge this year. They are aiming to take back the top spot, and top 4 in the state. The team consists of Seniors Cam Martin, Niko Ferra, and Ian Quinn, Juniors Cooper Hornack, Nico Zanella, and Anthony Barbieri, Sophomores Isaac Lacinski, Luke Boylan, and Calio Zanella, and a strong group of Freshmen Shaun Oden, Julian Bertucci, Cam Baker, Luca Rosa, Brady Valovchik, Jake Stewart, and Caden Ansani.
Captains: Niko Ferra & Cam Martin. Niko is a valiant leader who does anything for the team. His menacing mustache makes his opponents run off the mat and this year he up the terror with a caveman beard. Cam- aka "Party Marty," aka "The Secret Weapon." Cam is a tough leader who pushes the rest of the team. Also, give him props for having to practice with Luke Boylan every day.
Bocce Team: We are excited to announce our very own Unified Bocce team for this Winter! This will be a PIAA sanctioned sport ~ which means the students can letter for the year and be a Burrell Athlete! The team consists of a proportional number of students with and without disabilities. We are excited to bring even more INCLUSION to BHS. We will have 2 home matches and 2 away matches. We are really hoping to pack the ship when we have our home games in February.
Captains: Katie Armstrong, Hannah Nix, Adelynn Rusek, & Ian Gorham
Sleighing
Each class helped lead their Santa to the other end of the gym while riding on the bottom of a table (I mean sleigh). Santa’s elves were responsible for making sure the “sleigh” stayed upright and the reindeer "powered" (AKA got rolled on) the sleigh and Santa across the gym. Each team also had a teacher/staff member on their team as a reindeer. Many teams were stressed about possible injuries and general chaos and confusion. Thankfully, all teams finished with only minor dizziness and soreness with no major injuries incurred (except for one table, which I am sad to say will have to be retired). The Juniors had high pressure as their win was only 15 minutes long; but, unfortunately, they had to hand the trophy over at the end of the sleigh race because the Freshmen reached their cone first! Freshman Co-President, Abby Gerthoffer, accepted the trophy, but handed it to a Junior for a hot minute, and it was swept away back in the possession of the Juniors once again!

Mrs. Sankovich - Retirement and Birthday
This day was also Mrs. Sankovich's last day at Burrell High School. She served most of her tenure at the high school as our Attendance Secretary, but she also was at Stewart in between for a little while during her 16 years with Burrell. Those of you who miss a lot of school (or are often tardy) are very familiar with Mrs. Sankovich's smiling face! Mrs. Sankovich had no idea she would be recognized at the assembly, so she was shocked when she was called to come to the mic. Mr. Rossi said a few very kind words, and she received much applause at the end of the pep rally. It just so happens it was also her birthday, so the pep rally wrapped up with a full gym rendition of "Happy Birthday." Although Mrs. Sankovich declined to speak, she did blow a kiss into the crowd and applauded the students of BHS. You will be missed by students, and especially the staff, at BHS. Happy Retirement!!!
