Lending a Helping Hand
The Knead Cafe is a non-profit, community run restaurant located in New Kensington. The organization offers meals that are pay-what-you-can or pay-it-forward. The Knead Cafe takes in multiple types of volunteers from the community, including our Burrell Buccaneers! The Interact Club here at BHS takes 5 kids and a teacher chaperone every Friday to help serve, wait, or bus tables. Ms. Holtzman is the teacher that plans the Friday visits, but she makes it a point to get a variety of teachers to go down and help out. This idea originally started in the fall of 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was canceled and had to be stopped. Since starting back up again, everyone in Interact and The Knead Cafe has never been happier! Mrs. Holtzman is very proud of the outcome, and the amount of people willing to volunteer. Sophomore Juliana Fisher said, “It was an absolutely great experience shared with affable people. I was a hostess, which let me meet so many different people and see a glimpse of their day to day lives, which could be vastly different from many people here at school…” The Knead Cafe is one of the many volunteering activities the Interact Club participates in. Overall, it’s been successful and seems to be an ongoing thing Interact will be doing. Senior Emily Wojtczak (Interact President) said, "One of Interact's goals is to make sure that students take ownership of their neighborhood. Volunteering and service help people see the world beyond themselves. We hope to bridge that gap by making our club a part of a larger community."
