Burrell brings in the holiday and shuffles out the year with a Holiday Activities Day
Activity days are not just for elementary and middle school. At BHS, we do take a moment to just let it all go and celebrate, and obviously the day before Holiday Break is perfect for one of those days. On December 22, there was a 2 hour early dismissal day filled with fun, festive activities (who wants to do work on a day like that any way!). All funds generated from the day will support the Student Government's Crisis Fund which helps families in crisis from the high school. A total of $450 was raised and will be put to good use helping local families in need.
The competitive activities had an entry fee of $10 for the Gingerbread House decorating contest and $20 to compete in the volleyball tournament. All other activities were $1 to participate which included Club Wired (video games), Board Games, and Cocoa, Campfire & Carols, and Painting. The afternoon was a Lip Dub which has been on hiatus since before COVID.
Holiday Competition is ON!
Gingerbread House: Build it and they will come!
Nine teams joined the Gingerbread House competition. They had the morning to construct their houses only using the supplies available in the kis provided. Students and staff voted during AR to declare a winner. Team "Naughty List" was won the most votes. The team was Juniors Captain Taylor Dentzel and Makenzie Schuller. They both recieved a $5 Sheetz gift card as a prize!
Always nice, "Naughty List" Team, Juniors Taylor Dentzel & Makenzie Schuller begin the build.

Volleyball tournament rocks the gym again this year
This year's volleyball tournament proved to be just as competitive and fun as previous years. It was a single round elimination game ending with a championship match with the winning student team Chewblockas vs. the teachers. In total 16 teams participated in this year's single elimination tournament. To no one's surprise, Junior Rory Pallone and the “Chewblockas” came out victorious in the event taking the first place trophy from Junior Chantz Watkins of “The Stinky Mistletoes”. It was no easy road for the “Chewblockas” with their smallest win margin being by only five points to Senior Chase Fenner’s “Hick Slickers”. The championship match against the teachers ended the tournament with the “Chewblockas” outscoring the teachers for the W.

Holiday Activities
Board Games Are Never Boring
Board Games in the BHS Library raised $45 for the Crisis Fund. Popular games included Uno, Yahtzee, 24 Game, Monopoly, Othello, and playing card games. Some students teamed up to use the time to complete jigsaw puzzles. While most students enjoyed the break from technology, some used their cell phones to play online games like Heads up and Among Us. Some confident students entertained the crowd by performing some holiday karaoke songs in the Library Classroom computer lab.
Cocoa, Campfire, & Carols
Mr. Thome and Mr. Pounds hosted campfires for the students to sit around and enjoy the outdoors. They were able to roast marshmallows, drink hot cocoa, and share laughs and just enjoy each other's company and life's simple pleasures around the firepits.
Video Games
Our students were able to choose from a variety of video games set up around the board room. Guitar Hero, Super Smash Bros, and NHL games were a few popular options. Everyone got enough playing time, and enjoyed the intense head to head video game battles all day!
Painting Party
One entire half of the cafeteria was occupied by painting! Students were given with many different art supplies to let their creativity soar. Some painted Christmas-themed pieces, and others just let the canvas decide. It was a great way to relieve some holiday stress heading into Winter Break.
Study Hall
For those who didn't want to participate in the activities, a study hall was an option. They had the freedom to catch up on work, browse on their phones, get away from the hustle and bustle, and kick back and relax.
Lip Dub is Back!
BHS Lip Dub is back and bumping
Even though students were unfamiliar with what a Lip Dub even was, the buzz eventually got started and around 200 staff and students participated in the last couple hours of the school day. A Lip Dub is basically a one shot music video with no editing. There are no cuts in the songs or action. Different people lip sync the music with people in the background dancing and cheering matching the theme of the song being played. All participants gather in on location at the end of the shot to do a giant celebration. The most interesting part is the fact that the school is silent except for the music over the PA system. Everything is either silently lip synced and all the cheering in the background is silent. It takes a lot of coordination by the student leaders. It only took around 3-4 attempts to get the best one. For this being the first lip dub since 2019, it went smoothly. This year the student leaders were Sophomore Bella Harvey-Cowen, Senior Cassidy O'Brien and Junior Payton Montgomery. Mr. Connolly, who is just coming off the successful fall play, is the adult director of the entire lip dub.
The theme was "The Decades - the 1960's to 2020s". Here is a rundown of the songs featured in the Lip Dub:
