The Gratitude Tree on display in the second floor hallway stemmed from the SEL Gratitude unit. After Mrs. Anthony taught a prepared lesson, two of her students, freshmen Laney Kaczor and Emma Hughes, were inspired to take it a step further and think about how they could show their thanks this holiday season. They came up with the Gratitude Tree, a project for the whole class to work on to give thanks for specific people and things in their lives. Students cut out a big green paper Christmas tree and a gold star for the top and then used a dye cut machine to punch out red ornaments to decorate it. Students wrote their names on the front of the ornaments and what they're thankful for on the back. Next, they wrote letters to family and friends, told them why they are grateful to have them in their lives, let them know what gift they would give to them to show how much they care if money was no object, and then wrapped up the letters up as gifts to put under the tree. All students were happy to participate and grateful for the opportunity to give thanks in a new way. Words are powerful. Hughes said, "You don't need a physical gift. Words are enough to show your gratitude." Even going a step further, some students plan on writing more letters and cards to give to family members and friends to share their love and appreciation. Let's all show a little more gratitude for what we have this season, and think of new ways to show those around us how much we care about them every day.

Dear Ava, I am so grateful for you. I would love to thank you by sending you to Hollywood. Due to economic restrictions I can't do that. I am thankful for everything you've done. You are so silly, and you make everything fun. You are so smart and giving, you are the best.
Dear Christina, I'm thankful for you because you are a loyal friend and you're funny. I liked the way we laugh til our stomachs hurt about Mr. Wen. If i had to give you something for being my friend for so long I would give you a box filled with 50k lead pencils
Dear Mom, Thank you for providing me with the perfect life. You have taught me to become the best I possibly can. If I could I would gift you with a trip to Hawaii.
Dear Karcey, I am grateful for you in so many ways. Being friends with you has been a life altering experience (in a good way). Our friendship is one of the best things I have ever had. The present I want to get you is a little bit out of my price range because a trip to Hawaii is a bit expensive. So instead, I gift you the present of being my friend and being able to be in my present.
