BHS Game Jam has "Time" on its side
Burrell High School hosted the eighth annual Westmoreland County Gifted Coalition's Game Jam on Wednesday, February 1. Eight neighboring school districts participated. Belle Vernon, Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Salem, Monessen, Mount Pleasant, New Kensington, Penn Trafford, and Yough brought ten total teams to the high school library. Teams of 4-5 students had approximately two hours to create a board game fitting the overarching theme of "time." Requirements included creating an original name of the game, designing it to be suitable for 4-5 players, writing clear rules and objectives, and determining a way to end the game declare a winner. Teams could use the Internet and printer to assist in board game design and research. There were basic supplies provided, and teams were also encouraged to bring their own unique items to the event. Students were able to think about their game ahead of time, but all construction had to occur in the time allotted. Teams briefly presented their games to the large group of competitors, and then students test played and evaluated all the board games. The three highest scoring games were determined from an average of all the evaluations recorded, winning first, second, and third place awards. And one "People's Choice Award" was decided by the adult Gifted coordinators in attendance.
