Life in Computer Science
On Friday February 17, former Burrell student Noor Buchi and his colleague, Daniel DeGraff, who are both software engineers for NetApp, visited the high school to give a presentation on what it is like to work in the computer science field as well as their college experience leading up to their careers. They first explained that NetApp is a company that stores applications and data both online and physically for other companies. They answered many questions about their recent work projects and college life and made sure to encourage everyone interested in computer science to attend as many summer camps as possible because they provide a fun experience to obtain very valuable information. Degraff even said, “If you are only going to listen to one thing I say, let it be this,” when referring to attending summer camps. Buchi and DeGraff ended their presentation with a sample coding problem that companies may use to see if potential employees have a basic knowledge of coding, which the attending students worked through together to solve. Senior Connor Kariotis said, “I enjoyed the presentation and believe it was very helpful for students interested in computer science.” Ultimately, it is important to consider many fields of study before committing to one, so all students are encouraged to take any opportunities like this one to learn more about different career paths.
