Burrell's math scores don't add up, BUT...
Can you solve this problem?
When a + b = 1 and a2 + b2 = 2, what does a3 + b3 = ?
Questions such as the one above are what could be found at the annual Calcusolve Competition at Franklin Regional High School. On Wednesday, March 15, seven Burrell students went to show off their math skills and tried to correctly answer as many questions as quickly as they could. The event consisted of nine individual problems and one team problem. Students were given 5 minutes to solve each problem without a hint, and another 3 minutes after a hint was given. Six seniors and one junior attended, most of which are Mr. Diehl's AP Calculus B/C students. Our top scorer, Senior Maggie Omecinski, said that she was impressed with how many she got correct and is glad that she had the opportunity to attend. Although neither Burrell team placed at the competition, Mr. Zanella took everyone to Burgatory for lunch and Crumbl for a sweet treat to finish off the day. Senior Aiden Malits said, "We did not do the best, but at least we got to get Burgatory afterwards." We hope to get more participants for next year's competition and improve upon Burrell's team and individual scores.
