Victory at the Greater Latrobe Art Event
One of our BHS students, Junior Ella Freshwater, was recently awarded a “Student’s Choice” accolade at the Greater Latrobe Art Event. The competition took place on Friday, March 3, and focused on the theme of “Symbolism Self-Portraits." The point of the project was for the student artists to represent themselves using different objects. They could choose to use paint, colored pencils, sculptural materials, or any other traditional material. They could also choose to use non traditional materials that are not usually seen in artworks, and this is the route Ella decided to take. She described her work as “an interruptive piece reflecting on our broken perception of ourselves. A mirror was shattered, and then combined with flowers and vines to represent the positive growth of rebuilding our self-confidence. On a bed of vines, mirror shards lay, and the incomplete mirror shows that growth takes time.” When asked how it felt to win Ella said, “Artwork can be in so many different mediums and my favorite is unconventional art. I was very honored to be chosen, but very surprised. I didn't think I would win, but I was so happy I did!” There were around twenty pieces that Ella’s art was chosen from. The Gifted Coordinator and chaperone for the event, Mrs. Aranyos said, “I am proud of Ella’s accomplishment.” The day was then wrapped up with a tour of Greater Latrobe’s vast collection of art throughout the school building, and a hands-on quilling activity. Hopefully there will be plenty more Burrell victories in the future!
