SEL Project spreads kindness this holiday season
Three fourth period teachers, Mr. Rossi, Mr. Facemyre, and Mrs. Anthony, joined forces to create a unique SEL project for the holiday season. They came up with the idea to supplement what was being done in class for SEL. Mr. Rossi said, "We wanted to engage students in tangible projects that would be mutually advantageous to both students and the benefactors of the kind deeds." The SEL Bake Sale was born which seemed like a great way to help students be more interactive with the community. Instead of sitting in classrooms and learning about kindness, why not get out and show some? The students agreed that it was a great idea. "It was good to raise money for our community," said Sophomore Brady Valovchik.
Since we are a hungry bunch here at BHS, there is no better way to raise money for kids in need than to sell food, especially the sugary kind. The classes were able to buy the sweet treats at the store or make them themselves, so all money raised went directly to the kids. Sophomore Jordan Betts made her own homemade cake that sold out within minutes. For about a week, the Bake Sale took place before school in the concession stand and went mobile during AR with students taking around the treat cart to ARs. With the help of an extremely generous donation from Mr. John O'Neil, one of our night-time custodians, the Bake Sale was able to raise $554.76 (Mr. Rossi wanted to be very specific).
Some volunteers from the classes travelled to Walmart in order to purchase the gifts to be donated. They were able to purchase gifts for about 11 kids from the community.
Overall, the classes believed it was a good way to manifest what they learned through SEL, raise money for kids in need, and support their own community with a little kindness of their own.
