We interviewed Marta Martinez Longo, a foreign exchange student from Spain staying with the Kariotis Family until June, to get to know her better and to learn about the differences and similarities between our two countries. If you have any classes with Marta or see her in the hall, please make her feel welcome and ask her some questions about Spain.
Q: What's the food like in Spain?
A: The food in Spain is much better than in America because it doesn't have artificial additives, and so much of the food here is fast food.
Q: How different is BHS compared to schools in Spain?
A: The schools are very different in Spain. There aren't any school sports teams. Students don't eat lunch at school. Students stay in the classroom, and the teachers are the ones who move around instead. The teaching styles are different, and classes are much easier here than in Spain.
Q: What's your favorite thing you have learned about America?
A: I like the culture and all the different foods I have tried so far.
Q: What do you prefer here that's better than what's in Spain?
A: I like the teaching style here because the objective is to learn useful information. In Spain we have to memorize a lot of facts to pass difficult tests.
Q: What is the biggest cultural difference between Spain and America?
A: The biggest cultural difference is the timing of meals. In Spain lunch is usually eaten between 2:00-3:00 PM, and dinner is eaten around 9:00-10:00 PM. Here it is much earlier. I'm now used to it, but it was hard at first.
