The ship sails on for Senior Seminar students
This year was the first year for the Senior Seminar class. This year was the pilot for a first ever combination Lit 12 and Government/Econ/Civics course. It took place as a block each day where students took a journey to understand themselves, their careers (and other careers), and some lit and civics along the way. There may have been a few bumps in the road (or rough sailing as we say in Senior Sem) but at the end of it all, students were really grateful for the experience.
On May 23 during the class block, students were asked to present a tri-fold that represented their journey throughout the year. Students invited family, friends, and teachers to watch as they presented their 5 minute presentation. No two students had the same experience. Some decide they were on the right path. Some decided the exact route. Some decided what wasn't right for them. Haydn Herbulock joked the entire time that he decided he was good at "changing his mind". In fact, his presentation was titled "untitled." since he never did make up his mind what career is exactly right for him.
Johnny Lukac who started his journey thinking he wanted to be an architectural engineer decided for sure that was not the career path he wanted. Lukac said, "I liked how we got to choose what we researched and the flexibility of the class." This flexibility allowed him to explore several options related to architecture but also to explore other different career paths which may be a better fit for his interests and talents.
Michael Ceraso commented on the fact that he enjoyed the teachers allowing everyone to be independent and explore the way that was right for each student.
Mrs. Shaffer's parting thoughts to the students of Senior Seminar were, "You guys are the best. Thank you for your patience and allowing us to use you as guinea pigs for this pilot. Also, thank you for your honesty which will help us build a better ship for our voyage next year. Come on, you know I couldn't leave you without at least one more ship pun! Also, good luck in all your endeavors, and here's to the end of one journey and the beginning of the next! Congratulations!"
