LIGHT Spreads Positivity with Painting
By Sen. Federer and Staff
Students gathered in the Art room during all AR blocks on May 25 to participate in the Positive Painting Project. After students finish their masterpiece and they thoroughly dry, a quote will be screen printed on to the students' paintings. Next year, they will be displayed in the bathrooms around the school to add some positivity to the school next year.
The Positive Painting Project was created after a freshman Fox Chapel student, Katie Whysong, died by suicide. Her family created the project in her memory with the mission statement "to increase the conversations, decrease the stigma, and provide opportunities for everyone in the community to create art that is a part of that effort." Students paint beautiful canvases, and then quotes are screen printed on the canvases. These signs will be hung up in public spaces around the school. This project is sponsored by LIGHT, “Leadership through Innovation in Genocide and Human rights Teaching.” LIGHT is a group at BHS that works to connect students to the community to raise awareness for issues of human rights and genocide and help them learn ways to act on these issues.
