BHS Social Studies classes pay tribute to the fallen of 9/11
By Staff
This year, the high school’s Social Studies department started a five year project in honor of the motto “Never Forget.” The goal is that within the next five years, all of those who lost their life on 9/11 will be commemorated. Mrs. Anthony commented on the reason why the department decided to create this project. “The kids here now [at BHS] were not alive during 9/11, so it is important to keep the memory of the victims alive.” Each student in all Social Studies classes were assigned a person and wrote a tribute. They researched their person and created a tribute which became a celebration of “a life lived” for that person.
On Friday, September 10, all classes reported to Buccaneer Stadium to share their tributes. It was a solemn event for the teachers and students alike. Sophomore Emma Conte commented about the event, “It made me realize how catastrophic 9/11 was, and how it still affects people today.” Mrs. Anthony thought the students were very appropriate during the tribute ceremony. “They did very well. It was very impressive how heart felt the students were and to see their realization that they [victims] were all regular people.”
This project will continue over the next five years ensuring that all those who lost their lives on that day will be memorialized. The teachers decided from the beginning it would be too much for one year, and they hope that each year the students will gain a personal connection to a new tribute and continue to feel the impact that 9/11 had and still continues to have on families and the country.

Flight 93 National Memorial
By Mrs. Aranyos
Several Burrell High School Gifted students had the opportunity to enrich their understanding of the events of 9/11 during a field trip to the Flight 93 National Memorial. They visited The Tower of Voices, a unique, 93 foot tall structure holding 40 wind chimes representing the 40 passengers and crew members. It marks the entrance to the memorial park, and is visible from Route 30. The Tower of Voices serves as a sound memorial symbolic of the enduring voices of these American heroes. Our students also toured the visitor center featuring artifacts and interactive exhibits that focus on the Flight 93 story.
More information about the memorial can be found here.
