MATH TEAM TO PENN STATE NEW KEN

Math Team traveled the very far distance to Penn State New Kensington on November 14th with chaperones Mr. Diehl and Mrs. Stumpf. The competition is 2 parts with 8 questions in each section. The first section is "decently harder than the second section," says Senior Abbie Gerthoffer. The students get a 10 minute break in between part 1 and part 2, which some used to go to the bathroom and others used to go to the Starbucks on campus. After completing the 2nd part, the scores are added up and released back to the teachers. The team scored decently overall with many students scoring a 4 or higher, and the top score from Burrell being a 6. Last year, the top score was a 3 which shows the drastic improvement from Burrell's Math Team. After the competition, the students chose China Lobster for lunch. They celebrated with the team and enjoyed the buffet. Once lunch was over, the students realized the bus was not back yet and convinced Mr. Diehl and Mrs. Stumpf to walk over to Dunkin for a fun drink!
MATH TEAM TO CLARION
The Math Team traveled to PennWest Clarion on November 6th, accompanied by Mr. Diehl and Mrs. Stumpf, to participate in the 39th Annual Ben Freed High School Mathematics Competition. Despite many of the students still being in the process of waking up, the bus left at 7:15 in the morning. After a long and bumpy ride, the group arrived on campus, found the right parking spot for the bus, and bravely walked into the building. Students then received a pencil, a testing folder, and a free t-shirt before being guided towards their seating area. The students were tasked with taking a 45-question math test full of calculus, riddles, and more. Following the 1 hour timed-test was lunch. PennWest Clarion generously opened their dining hall to the students. The Burrell Mathletes left after lunch, missing the awards ceremony, to ensure that the bus would return to school before 2:30.
