History of Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th each year. It is known for showing our love for others, but do you ever wonder why? The traditions of Valentine's Day date back to ancient Rome and a festival called Lupercalia that was celebrated in mid February. It was meant to purify the city and promote health and fertility for the next year. The men would have a box of women's names, and they would be paired for the festival, which sometimes led to marriage.
The traditional name “Valentine's Day” comes from a Christian martyr, Saint Valentine. He was a priest who lived during the 3rd Century. Emperor Claudius ll banned marriages because he thought single men preformed better as soldiers. Valentine did not listen to this edict and continued to perform marriages in secret. When the Emperor found out, Valentine was killed and became a martyr for love.
Over time, Valentine's Day has became a day for romance. By the middle ages it was common for people to exchange gifts to show affection. Today Valentine's Day is celebrated worldwide. People give cards, chocolate, flowers and more gifts to show their appreciation of their love for partners, family, and friends. The day is welcomed by those in love and by those in business of selling these gifts as well.

How Your Status Can Change Your Point of View
You may be someone who can take or leave this annual holiday tradition. A lot of people's opinions may by based on their relationship status or even if they have any cash handy during February. It is definitely a holiday rooted in the traditions of celebrating love, but sometimes depending on your point of view, you may have very different ways to celebrate or even ignore the holiday all together.
People in a long-term relationship
Even the idea of "celebrating love" can become just part of the status quo. Some people who have been in a relationship said there isn't as much need to celebrate on any specific day, and a few people thought they would much rather celebrate days that are special in their relationship rather than on Valentine's Day. One person who wishes to remain anonymous said, "If you have been doing it for awhile, it is hard to come up with new ways to celebrate and new gifts to buy". A Senior girl and Junior boy, who wish to remain anonymous both stated, "It is just another day to me, so who cares?" (Although interviewed separately, they did actually have the same exact wording, and they are not in a relationship together). Some people in long-term relationships feel a little more invested in the holiday and work to get that perfect gift. When asked about how he felt about the holiday, Junior Ryan Burkett simply said, "Expensive!"
People in a new relationship
People who have entered into a new relationship seem to have the most excitement for the holiday. One couple in particular, Sophomore Julia Junod and Junior Jake Stewart, who were interviewed separately weighed in the holiday. Jake said, "I don't know. It's just like a normal day. I'm just gonna probably take her out to dinner." Hopefully, Julia, who said, "I used to not like it, but now that I am in a relationship, I'm gonna like it" will not be too disappointed. She has high expectations as she added, "...so hopefully it's good."
Happily Single
Some people may view being single on Valentine's Day as a sad event; however, a lot of people still celebrate their friends and themselves and what the holiday stands for. Afterall, who knows you better than yourself, and what better person to buy you a gift than you. Junior Ethan Pickard shared that he was going to buy himself a Valentine's gift this year. "Why not still celebrate? So, I decided to buy myself a present for Valentine's Day," he said. Although not everyone agreed with his enthusiasm for the traditional love centered holiday, Senior Abby Ruffini simply stated, "I am not participating this year."
Regardless of your relationship status or your specific thoughts on the holiday, it is a nice day to take a moment and think about what you are grateful. It should be about the loved ones around you whether that is your special someone, your friends, your family, your pets, or even yourself. There is enough love in the world to go around, so on this Valentine's Day choose to send a little along the way.
