On April 10th, the EFS class went in the pouring rain to support the PA Fish and Boat Commission with stocking trout in Northmoreland Park. Each year, the PA Fish and Boat Commission help to keep natural waterways stocked with fish, in order to further interest in the sport for fishermen of all ages. Part of each PA fishing license goes to support nurseries/hatcheries which account for about 25% of the fish in PA's public waterways. Waterways Conservation Officers rely on the help of volunteers to stock around 3.2 million trout each year in lakes and streams across the state. There are four species that are stocked annually: Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Golden Rainbow. There are only around 10,000 (last year was 14,000) Golden Rainbow trout stocked a year, and they are a prize for any angler. You can see in the photos below that there were many Golden Rainbow trout stocked that day. Also called a Palomino trout, this species was actually an mutation at a hatchery in West Virginia but has become a coveted catch by many fishermen in our area. For more information, you check out the PA Fish and Boat Commission Website here.

Seniors Jillian Barbiaux and Abby Ruffini prepare to stock trout at Northmoreland Park.
Senior Abby Ruffini points out the multiple trout species the students stocked.
Senior Sierra Brown makes her feelings about fish and touching the bucket known, and it shows quite clearly on her face. Mr. Clair did help Sierra who did dump one bucket into the lake.
Junior Adam Wass lifts the lid of another bucket. Junior Ryan Wass along with Senior Marian Sirota and Juniors Steven Wilson & Nate Sofaly jokingly dare him to touch the fish. They were told when they started that you cannot touch the fish, so it is all just jokes!
