Anything Floats is an annual county-wide gifted competition where teams from Westmoreland County schools built boats and oars out of common household items like cardboard, wood, PVC, duct tape, milk jugs, water bottles, and buckets. No foam, inflatables, pool toys, or motors of any kind were allowed. The boat needed to sail two lengths of the BHS pool. Two team members started the race on their boat in the deep end of our pool, and at the shallow end, they switched with their other two teammates.
Greater Latrobe, Penn Trafford, and Southmoreland School District sent teams to compete. Burrell's team consisted of Juniors David Kleckner, Adam Sheftic, Aaron Holm, and Brayden Snyder. This is the third year in a row they competed, and the second year in a row they've won the whole thing. Going into the race Kleckner said, "We are confident that our boat will stay afloat and sail to victory because of its sound construction." Holm was equally optimistic. "We're going to win this because of our beastly athletic abilities," he said. This team sailed to victory with quick times in all their heats. Although they crushed the competition, the highlight of the day was going to China Lobster for a celebratory all-you-can-eat buffet lunch.
