Adobe Premiere Pro is one of the most used editing systems used in the UK along with Avid Media Composer. Both systems work in very similar ways.
Both offer a huge array of tools that you can use to turn your footage in to highly polished, professional looking films.
The key to learning to edit is to practice so that you become more familiar with the software, learn where all the shortcuts are and get to a stage where you can focus more on creating your film rather than wondering which button to press.
Adobe have a range of tutorials that you can watch in your own time that are well worth a watch:
Open Premiere Pro and click on the 'Learn' button on the left hand side of the screen.

Setting Up Your Projects:
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand how to set up a project and sequence so that it matches UK broadcast requirements.
Tutors will request that the project & sequence will either be:
- in 4K (3840 x 2160)
- or HD (1920 x 1080).
Unless permission is given otherwise, projects should also be set at 25 frames per second.
SETTING UP A PROJECT
It’s vital that we get the Project Setting right at the very start of a project and the two key factors that we have to consider are the FORMAT / FRAME DIMENSIONS as well as the FRAME RATE.
You should be shooting in either 4k or HD at a frame rate of 25 frames per second. The same settings are needed for your SEQUENCE SETTINGS in Premiere.
IF you have shot your material in a different format or at a different frame rate, your project should STILL be created as either 4k or HD at a frame rate of 25 frames per second.
The settings should be either:
4K FORMAT / DIMENSIONS
3840 x 2160 pixels
HD FORMAT / DIMENSIONS
1920 x 1080 pixels
AND
FRAME RATE
25 Frames Per Second
STEP 1: CREATING THE PROJECT
When loading up Premiere Pro for the first time you will be presented with a new page with THREE key sections to consider: PROJECT NAME, LOCATION & TEMPLATE
NEW PROJECT - <enter name here>
LOCATION - <*SEE BELOW>
TEMPLATE - <BROADCAST TEMPLATE PROJECT>
*The LOCATION where you save your project should NEVER be the ‘C Drive’ as it will save your project to the machine you are using at that moment in time which is likely to be problematic for you in the future.
*The best option is to save the project to your own portable hard drive that you can plug in to any college computer and take home with you. It also means that you have every element you need in one place - the sequence, the footage, your music, etc.
*However if you do not have a hard drive, SD card or USB stick to save your project to, you can always set it up on One Drive so that it should be accessible on computers all around the College.
Then select BROADCAST TEMPLATE PROJECT from the TEMPLATE window in order to ensure that your projects meets the basic broadcast parameters.
IF this page does not launch when you start Premiere Pro, click NEW PROJECT on the top left of the main page and you will then be taken to the main IMPORT page where you can add footage to your project. At the top of that page, you will often find the same options are available at the top of the screen:
STEP 2: CREATING THE SEQUENCE
Once the overall project has been created, you need to create a sequence and check that again it is in the right FORMAT / FRAME DIMENSIONS as well as FRAME RATE on the same settings as above.
Click on FILE > NEW > SEQUENCE and you will be presented with another menu where you can set your specific SEQUENCE PRESETS - either HD or 4K:
Once the sequence has been created, you can RIGHT CLICK on it and check that it has worked by selecting SEQUENCE SELECTION:
STEP 3: ADDING FOOTAGE TO THE SEQUENCE
Ideally you would have already shot your footage using the same settings so that the process of adding it in to both the PROJECT and the SEQUENCE is straightforward.
To add footage to your project, click the IMPORT tab at the top left of the main page (1), go to you footage using the navigation buttons on the middle left of the page (2) and choose the files that you would like to import (3).
Warning: Make sure that the 'Create New Sequence' option on the right hand side of the page is turned off.
Tick the box next to the clip and then press the blue IMPORT button in the bottom left corner to add it to the PROJECT.
Once the footage is in the PROJECT, you can add it to the PREVIEW WINDOW to start editing with or drag it directly in to the SEQUENCE.
IF the footage isn't shot in HD or 4K or is running at 25 frames per second, when you import it in to the SEQUENCE, Premiere Pro will ask you if you want to change the SEQUENCE to match the FOOTAGE - DO NOT DO THIS....
Having set the PROJECT and the SEQUENCE up at the beginning of the process, we should never need to change it so instead Premiere Pro needs to convert the footage to match the SEQUENCE when you bring it in to the timeline.
If everything is working, you can try editing...
