The band program at Liberty Middle School is the largest organization at the school, with more than 230 students, and has a long tradition of excellence. Students who join band in the 6th grade begin learning the basics of playing an instrument that will allow them to participate in the 7th and 8th grade bands, as well as band at the high school if they choose to do so. The 8th grade band annually plans a trip where they will perform at Carowinds, Busch Gardens, or participate in State Band Festival. In addition to receiving a strong music education, students are joining a class that allows them numerous social opportunities in future grades.

43% of the students at LMS are enrolled in band. Liberty Middle School currently has the largest 6th grade band in Burke County! Because band classes meet during the school day only, a large number of athletes are able to be in band. More than 80% of band students are on the A or AB Honor Roll each semester. For the last four years, Liberty has had the highest number of performers selected to participate in All-County Band, All District Band, and All State Band of any middle school in Burke County. Band students represent some of the best and brightest students at Liberty Middle.

Students may play FLUTE, CLARINET, ALTO SAXOPHONE, TRUMPET, TROMBONE, and PERCUSSION. If numbers are filled in one section, students will be given their 2nd or 3rd choice. Saxophone and Percussion numbers will be limited to 1-2 students from each elementary school for 6th grade band. Flute numbers will also be limited to 4 students from each elementary school. These limits are put in place so the ensemble has a great balance which is necessary for group success.

· Is Band a Class? Yes. Band is a class that meets every day in the 6th grade.

  • Does The Band Practice After School? No. The only after-school requirements for 6th grade band are our two evening concerts in December and May.
  • Does Band Cost A Lot of Money? No. The largest expense involved in band is purchasing an instrument. Music and Arts, located in Hickory, offers very good and affordable rental/payment plans for instruments. The Band Attic (Spencer, NC) also services our school. In addition, finding an inexpensive used instrument is easy. Cost should never be a factor in preventing a student from joining band. A very limited number of school-owned instruments are available for student in financial need.
  • Can Students Be In Band At A Later Time If They Do Not Join In The 6th Grade? No. Students who do not sign up for band during 6th grade will not be able to be apart of the program in the 7th or 8th grade. For this reason, we suggest that students try band in the 6th grade then decide whether they want to continue. If students do not start in the 6th grade, they lose the choice of taking band in the future.
