6th Grade English Language Arts

Welcome to 6th Grade ELA!

I am excited that you will be a part of our team. I expect your child’s very best behavior, effort, and attendance as we work together this year. The following information is provided as a guide to help your child understand the expectations for my class.

The sixth grade Language Arts curriculum will follow the The Georgia Standards of Excellence available on the Georgia Department of Education website.

The Georgia Standards of Excellence ELA Standards focuses on four areas:

  • Reading – An emphasis on text complexity and rigor to promote comprehension through a variety of genre.
  • Writing – A focus on authentic writing samples and the use of technology to encourage students to develop argumentative/opinion pieces, informative/explanatory writings, narrative texts, and research projects.
  • Speaking and Listening – Effectively communicating in both formal and informal situations
  • Language (Grammar) – Includes the conventions for writing and speaking. Vocabulary will be acquired through a mix of conversation, direct instruction, and reading.
