March/April 2020

Where did February go? With the end of February we are officially into the last trimester of kindergarten. It will be filled with more readiness activities to prepare your children for the first grade next year. You will find your child’s report card in the March 6th Friday folder.

We are starting this month with “signs of spring.” Our themes are related to weather (wind, clouds and rain). We will experiment with the colors of the rainbow and learn about primary and secondary colors. Please look for the special “cloud” homework assignment in your child’s Friday Folder today. It will be due on Monday, March 9th. We will also learn about some of our feathered friends and other ovipourous animals. Your children will participate in some egg experiments and view our kindergarten nest museum. We will begin our farm unit which will culminate into our Kindergarten Hoedown performance on Friday, April 3rd. More information regarding the performance will come in your child’s Friday folder. Be sure to put this date on your calendar as all kinders will attend the morning session that day. The performance will take place in our school gym at 9:30 a.m.

In the next couple of weeks, we will be sending permission forms and donation requests for our Folsom Zoo field trip in May. These monies go towards the cost of our admission, bus transportation and a provided snack. This is a modified school day for all kindergarteners. School will begin at 8:30 and dismiss at 12:00 p.m. An attached letter will tell all about it.

We have been sending your child’s leveled reading stories in their Friday Folders. Please have your child read these orally to an adult each week to help reinforce what they are learning in the classroom.

There is no school on Monday, March 16th due to our district In-service day.

Our Brooks School Bingo Night is on Friday, March 27th, it’s sure to be a great time for socializing with other parents that evening.

Spring break is April 6-17th, we will resume school on Monday, April 20th.

Be sure to make note of upcoming events. You can check our website under the class calendar heading.

Again, thank you all for your continued support!

Mrs.Christensen and Mrs. Croyle

February 7, 2020

Dear Kindergarten families

Welcome February! We began February with the continuation of our bear unit and preparing for Valentine’s day. Next we enjoy some friendship activities that take us towards our Valentine’s/Friendship class party. The planning for this party is underway. Please remember to have your child sign their name only on the cards (23). We would like their cards to come the day before, February 13th (if possible) so that they are here and ready to distribute first thing on party day. Also this month, we will learn about our presidents, with a focus on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In honor of our “President’s Day” holidays, we have two NO school days, one on February 10th and the other on the 17th. We will end this month with a unit on life in the Arctic and Antarctica. We will learn about penguins and their habitats.

A note regarding our February ‘kindness notes” are in this week’s Friday folders. These notes are filled out at home and can be brought into class and shared on any day. If you run out of the pink slips just put your note on any paper you have at home.

Our class has now had a couple of weeks to take home library books. Please remember that library books are due back on our library day-Thursday. These books are great to add to the monthly reading logs. Speaking of reading, your children should be bringing home their reading group story papers. These are the stories they are practicing in class. We appreciate you having your child read them to reinforce the skills being taught.

February wraps up the end of our second trimester. We will be assessing your children on second trimester benchmarks. Please practice number recognition out of sequence, number order and number writing to twenty. Some students are still challenged by these numbers, especially the teens. Students should be able to recognize and know the sounds of letters and begin blending them into simple words like, cat, dog, jet, nut, mop, lip, etc… Most sight words have been introduced and students should know between 15 and 20. We will be emailing conference notices on an “As Needed” basis next week. Our conferences will take place on Thursday, February 27th. Please be sure to look in your child’s Friday folder every week and return the empty folder every Monday.

Thank you again for all of your support in and out of our classroom.

Happy February,

Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Croyle

January 10th, 2020

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We hope that everyone had a nice break and are ready to begin the New Year!

Our class activities this month are focused around a winter theme….snowmen, ice and seasonal projects. We will continue to practice the correct way to write numerals 1 through 20, counting by tens and reinforce numerical concepts with number games and other math lessons.

We will soon begin our leveled reading groups this month. These groups will incorporate phonics practice, sight words and reading little books. These books will come home in paper form in your child’s Friday folders. Please have your child practice reading them to you.

We will be reading The Mitten by Jan Brett. Your child will be illustrating a condensed version of this story and will also learn to track various animals by identifying their footprints in the snow. This will lead us into a unit on animals in winter, which takes a closer look at bears and their relatives.

The weekly library books that are checked out of the school library will be coming home with your child at the end of this month. Be sure to check your child’s backpack on the last Thursday of the month for the book and the letter that will accompany it. This is a big responsibility for your child since he or she will need to remember to return the book the following week on or before his/her library day. If the book is not returned, your child will not be able to check out another book until it is. This is often a devastating experience for a kindergartner! Please help your child develop good habits and together decide upon a good place to safely keep the book at home and a method to remind your child to return it on time. If your child takes the bus or goes to extended day, be sure that a backpack is available to carry the book home safely.

Second trimester progress reports have been sent home in today’s Friday folder. These reports are sent on an “As Needed” basis. Students who are having difficulty in areas of the kindergarten program will be receiving one. Please use this information to help your child at home with the areas that have been identified as a challenge. After further assessment this month and next, we will be holding parent conferences on an “As Needed” basis as well. The date for these conferences will be Thursday, February 27th. You will receive an email in a few weeks if we feel one is needed. As always, you may request a meeting with us at anytime and we can coordinate a time with you.

Don’t forget that there are two “NO School” days this month. The first day will be Friday, January 17th for our District Inservice Day the other on Monday, January 20th, when we observe Martin Luther King day.

The 100th day of school will occur on Thursday, January 21st. A special 100th day project will be due on that day. Information explaining the project was sent home in the Friday folder today. We will be asking each child to count to 100 by ones and tens, a skill that we continue to practice in school and one that most have mastered at this point in our kindergarten year. “Zero the Hero” our fictional character used to refer to the 0’s in our tens and 100 numbers may be mentioned to you at home too. Along with our “Hero” theme this week, we would like to recognize and invite any family members that provide services that help others or a talent that could be shared in class with our students. Please contact us if you are interested in doing this.

On February 14th we will celebrate Valentine’s Day with our “friendship class party.” Our room parents will be coordinating it and more information will follow. Children will be able to distribute valentine cards to classmates that day. We ask that your child only sign the from portion with their name. In February we will observe the President’s Day Holiday. Our district will have no school on February 10th and February 17th. Please mark these dates on your calendars.

Thanks so much for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Croyle

December 2019

Dear Families

December will include many holiday activities. This time of year can be exciting and busy for all, along with that, can come some distraction and tiredness. Please try to keep regular bedtimes and school routines in place while enjoying the season.

We will continue to focus on and emphasize some of the more challenging kindergarten standards. In math we are practicing simple addition to ten. We will be writing the numbers 1-20 and emphasizing the teen numbers. In language arts we will continue to introduce more sight words and practice blending sounds to make words. Your child’s writing is developing as we practice sounding out words and using our sight words to make sentences. We do weekly thematic writing that is saved for a special book that you will receive at the end of the school year. Students also participate in personal journal writing which we evaluate on an informal basis. Please encourage your child to write at home using inventive “sound out” spelling and focus on correct spelling of our sight words words.

On Monday, December 9th, our class will have the opportunity to shop at our Santa’s Secret Store coordinated by our PTA. This store is designed for students who would like to buy gifts for their family and friends. If you would like your child to participate, please return the envelope that will be provided and sent home prior to this date in their Friday folder.

On Friday, December 20th please join us for an informal holiday presentation. Our class will perform the songs and poems they have learned this month. Our door will be opened to families at 8:10 a.m. just after students come inside and we take attendance. Our performance will begin at 8:15 a.m. on that Friday. This performance is about 15-20 minutes in total. Our school has designated this day as “Pajama Day” and because of this we are asking students to wear holiday “jammies” if they have them, or holiday wear (red & green). Most important is that they come and enjoy!

This day is also our winter party. More information about our party will follow.

The November homework calendar and November reading log are due. School resumes on Monday, December 2nd from Thanksgiving Break. December homework has been distributed in the Friday folder and is due upon our return from winter break.

Happy Holidays to Everyone!

Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Croyle

November 2019

Dear Kindergarten Families,

The first trimester of school is officially behind us. Your child’s report card will go home on Friday, November 8th in their Friday folder. We are so pleased to see the growth that your children have made in such a brief amount of time. As we enter into the second trimester, academic benchmarks will increase. Please continue to practice the “sight words” at home and reinforce numbers and number concepts to twenty.

We want to thank Mrs. Balsama and Mrs. Frago for organizing a wonderful Harvest Party and to all who helped and volunteered their time to make it a great event for our class!

We are starting this month out learning about the seasons. A notice reminding your child to bring in a collection of fall leaves will come home 11/1 in the Friday folder. We will be using these leaves for math, writing and art the following week.

We will become more familiar with spelling short words, using special “word families” like (at, ig, og, an,ut, ed, et, ap...) that will help to reinforce our beginning reading and writing skills.

Last, we will introduce the story of The Little Red Hen. This old favorite lends itself to discussing cooperation and helping others. We will combine this story’s lesson with how the native Americans helped the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving, along with learning about living now and long ago. We will also share and reflect on the things that we are thankful for.

Please remember that Monday, November 11th we will observe “Veterans Day.” There will be no school on that day.

Our last school day in November will be Friday, November 22nd. The following week is our Thanksgiving Break.

Remember to turn in the monthly reading log at the end of each month. Thank you!

When we return from the Thanksgiving holiday, December activities will be upon us. Be sure to check this website for special dates/activities in December and our class Winter performance the last week of school in December.

We are thankful for all of you!

Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Croyle

September 27th - October 2019

Dear Families,

Thank you for attending your child’s parent conference this week. It is always nice to have this personal time with our student’s parents and celebrate their progress.

The following weeks, will include lessons about different kinds of transportation, using the story “Rosie’s Walk”. Students will practice using prepositions like (under, over, around, past, through, across, etc…) in their reading and writing. We will learn about our “Five Senses” using nonfiction sources and hands-on materials to develop our understanding of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling.

Ask your child about their “Zoophonics” friends and their real names too. Our sight word list continues to grow, these words are not always phonetic and need to be memorized. We have been practicing number names, counting and number formation. We are beginning to use our class number line to count up or down and discuss more and less. We are using base ten formats to establish the tens and ones concept. Please practice recognizing and writing numbers to ten and if successful go on to twenty, keeping in mind that the teen numbers can sometimes be difficult.

We will be having a classroom harvest party on October 31th. More information will follow regarding that day.

REMINDERS:

September Reading Logs are due. Please sign and return these as they are considered your child’s homework on the report card. Also, we strongly encourage you to look and do the “Optional Homework” on the back of the monthly logs. The activities help to reinforce what we are learning in class.

As our weather cools down, please remember to label clothing (jackets, etc…).

Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Croyle

September 2019

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We hope that you all had an enjoyable Labor Day weekend. Our upcoming shortened week will include some color and shape practice. The following two weeks we will be reading a book by Eric Carle titled Brown Bear, Brown Bear. This story introduces colors and is always a kindergarten favorite.

In order to reinforce our exploration of color, if possible, please have your child wear something in the "color of the day" beginning on Monday, 9/9 for the next two weeks. Dates and colors are printed below. We will also be learning the names of shapes. At home, please practice these shapes with your child; triangle, rectangle, square, circle, hexagon, sphere, cone, cylinder and cube.

Apples and Trees will follow Brown Bear. During this week, students will learn about what trees need to live and the different parts and types of trees. We incorporate some learning and stories about Johnny Appleseed and everyone gets to bring an apple to share this week as we will end the unit making applesauce together.

Our first trimester conferences are soon approaching. Be sure to check our school online scheduler and class emails for more information and sign-up times. It is up to you to acquire your appointment time online. It is our understanding that the online scheduler will be open soon. You will be notified when it does. Mrs. Christensen and Mrs. Croyle have Tuesday and Wednesday, September, 24th & 25th as their scheduled conference days. We will be holding our conferences in the main school office. Our students will have a substitute on those days.

During conference week there will be NO EARLY RELEASE that Wednesday, September 25th. Kindergarten will be on a regular school day schedule.

Reminders:

Continue to check your child’s Friday Folder every Friday and return on Monday. We will sometimes have requests for that next week’s theme and appreciate your attention to them.

If your child wishes to wear accessories to school (watches, necklaces, bracelets, bows, etc…)please let them know that they must stay on during class time. We find that often they can become distractions and or come off and get lost.

Please remember to label ALL of your child’s belongings (backpacks, lunch boxes, water bottles, sweaters, jackets, etc…).

School Jog-a-thon is on Friday, 9/13. Information came home in the last Friday Folder.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Christensen and Mrs.Croyle

Dear Families,

We are off to a great start! Your children have learned about our classroom rules and are enthusiastically participating in daily routines and activities.

The infamous Gingerbread Man will make his appearance next week as we will be baking him on Monday. We will read several versions of this classic story and prepare for a hunt to find our tricky little cookie! Please DO NOT share about our hunt as Our Gingerbread Man will escape from our school oven and keep us hunting to find him during our week. We use this hunt to learn about places on our campus, i.e. (our library, office, “buddies room,” gym). We will eventually find him and get to enjoy some yummy gingerbread cookie together.

Next week we will introduce “Zoophonics” (Zoo”friends”) to the class. This program uses movement and songs to help learn letter names and sounds. WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN and OUR CLASSROOM!

We are looking forward to meeting all of you at our “Meet & Greet” on Tuesday, August 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. We will have some paperwork for parents to fill out and some activities for our kindergarteners. This day is to familiarize our “kinders” with the classroom set-up and to say “hello” before that first day of school.

On the first day of school (Wednesday, August 7th), we will be on an “Early Release Day” schedule. Our times that day and every Wednesday are from 8 a.m.-10:45 a.m. On this day, we ask that you arrive promptly at 8:00. Students can hang their backpacks up on the hooks in front of our classroom and take their snacks out having it in hand when they line up on the white line. Give your hugs and kisses beforehand and encouraging words for a great first day! At the end of the day we will not release your child without your “Going Home” information. Please be patient at the door as we look for you and dismiss your child to you.

Also, on the 7th, we will be having our “Back to School Night” from 5:30 p.m.-6:10 p.m. This is an informative night for parents/adults only. We will go over what a kindergarten day looks like and curricular information.

The first week of school can bring about all kinds of feelings, both for the students and the parents. We want you all to know we will be here for all of you throughout our school year together, but especially these first few days as we know excitement, anxiety and tiredness can occur. We look forward to having your little ones in our classroom this year and watching them blossom and grow!
