Although I have been employed as a school nurse in Bellbrook for over 23 years and have worked in all of the buildings, this is my first year to be at only one school, the high school! We are now extremely fortunate to have a full-time certified school nurse in each of our buildings in order to best serve the needs of our students and staff.
School nurses provide a range of services that include, but are not limited to health assessments, vision and hearing screenings, monitoring communicable diseases and immunization compliance, providing for emergency intervention for illness, injuries, and other urgent situations, maintaining and interpreting health information to accommodate the needs of students, and recommending, implementing and supervising school health policy and protocols including medication administration and staff wellness..
Certified School Nurses have the professional training, education and skills to be the bridge between education and health, school and community, classroom and home. Educational outcomes for students are impacted by their physical, social and emotional health. In addition, we encourage parents to contact us with any concerns that you have regarding the health status of your child. It is our goal to be a resource and partner to students, parents, staff members, and health care providers.
Biography: Prior to marriage and children, I graduated from Ohio State University with a BSN, and worked in Labor and Delivery in Columbus, hoping to become a nurse-midwife. However, marriage and small children changed those plans, but fortunately my Master's Degree in Maternal and Child Health Nursing from the University of Cincinnati was quite appropriate for my career in school nursing.
When my sons were small, I began volunteering in the clinic at Stephen Bell and Sugarcreek Elementary and thus, became interested in school nursing. After receiving my School Nurse Certification from WSU, I was hired in 1995 as the district's first school nurse and traveled between 4-5-4-3-2-1 buildings over the next 24 years. My husband and I have lived here in the township on a farm for over 27 years and all three of our sons benefited from a very sound and comprehensive public school education in Bellbrook.
