Math: In math class we will be using Open up resources as our math curriculum. Our first unit in 7th grade math will be focusing on Scaled Copies and using proportions to scale different shapes. In 8th grade we will begin the year with Rigid Transformations. We will focus on Reflections, Rotations, and Translations. We will be using IXL and Khan to support this curriculum.
Language Arts: As always, the focus in ELA class will be helping every scholar make significant gains in both reading and writing. We will be tackling several units this year that cover a variety of genres: narrative, informational text, historical fiction, and more. The overarching theme for the year will be The Stories We Tell, The Stories We Don't Tell. This means that, in each unit, we will be analyzing the voices that are uplifted, while also examining the consequences of the voices that are not highlighted in the texts we read.
Science: We are starting off the year with a mini-unit about the Rope Box which is designed to help students be scientists. They will make observations and inferences to create a model rope box. Their model will work like the real Rope Box, but these scientists will never be able to see inside it. This mimics real life as scientists have made models of the center of the earth, the atom, etc., but no one has ever been able to directly observe them. Here is our Science Daily Agenda if you'd like to see what we're doing each day.
Social Studies: To begin this year, students will be grappling with the questions of "Who am I?" and "Who are We?" as we build our classroom community and get to know each other. We will focus on identity, culture, and storytelling through artifacts as well as establishing our community to meet the diverse needs of everyone. The overarching theme of this year is aligned with ELA using the lens of storytelling to explore the rise of human civilization.
