In the midst of April, whether you knew it or not, Gallatin High’s Band, Orchestra and Choir competed in the District Music Festival in Helena, Montana. To say the least, it was a massive success. For the choir, eleven songs were sent, nine of which were solos and the remaining two were duets. Nine of these qualified for state. For the band, eight songs were sent and five qualified. Furthermore, for the orchestra, thirteen were sent and all qualified for the State Music Festival.
But how does one qualify for state? For state music festival qualification students must score a superior rating. Based on the event that a student competes in, points vary, but the standards for a superior remain similar. Students must show themselves to be on par or above and beyond in their tone, dynamics, intonation, accuracy and interpretation. This rubric is the same for both state and district music festivals as well as for both ensembles and soloists.
When these groups went to state, all musicians who chose to compete on the state level, hosted at Skyview High School, once more gained superior ratings. This is an incredible accomplishment for the GHS music program and we hope to see this program continue to grow and further their accomplishments as years go on.
