Interstellar is widely regarded as some of Christopher Nolan’s best work, and for good reason. There are very few dystopian movies that truly reach Interstellar’s level of pure creativity. Nolan’s interpretation of Earth's future is completely foreboding, mind-twisting, and fascinating, which was absolutely necessary for keeping the audience engaged for almost three hours.
The whole film takes place in several outer worldly settings that are brought to life beautifully. The set of the movie was really used to Nolan's advantage, as the overall look of the film is one of its biggest successes. It is a very satisfying movie to watch and the cinematography of it all is incredible.
Another big success of Interstellar is Mathew McConaughey’s stellar performance as a father, astronaut, and farmer. His performance had a wide range of emotion, good for conveying the insane and inhumane events that he was going through. With that being said, McConaugheys overall ‘chill’ personality while portraying a not so chill character was hilarious. Throughout the movie he dedicates himself to saving his kids. However, his relationship with his son, played by young Timothee Chalamet, is comically bad and almost non-existent. Whether Nolan’s intentions were to have McConaughey ignore half of his family, it is definitely amusing watching Chalamet’s character become more and more obsolete. By the end of the film, McConaughey’s character developed a closer relationship with a robot, who resembles a refrigerator, more so than his own son.
Overall, the movie is definitely a must watch especially for those who love cinematography and dystopian worlds. Even though the movie is three hours long, it keeps attention spans running. The plot twists, the design, and McConaughey's portrayal of an explorer scientist/ terrible father all come together smoothly in a movie which will keep you thinking about it for a few days after.
