Two years after the release of her album “Sour”, Olivia Rodrigo once again dominates the scene with the release of her new album, “Guts”. The album is 12 songs long, with each track being unique in its own way.
Songs like “ballad of a homeschool girl” and “bad idea right?” take on more of a rock feel with the intense drum and guitar in the production, showing edge to her work. Other songs such as “lacy” and "logical” take on a much slower, melancholy tone. Each song is different, but similar enough that the album as a whole is still cohesive.
The subject matter of the tracks also vary. From songs about jealousy, to fear of growing out of the perfect teenage years, to describing how previous love did her wrong, Rodrigo shows her maturing sound and technique. “Guts” dives into some of her insecurities via lyrics and the production of various songs also contributes to this message.
Rodrigo did an excellent job by keeping the sound that made her famous while also leaning into new areas of song as well. A wide collection of sound, from rock to soft pop makes the album an enjoyable listening experience.
Album rating: 93/100. A solid album, with variety both in production and lyrics. Each song is different in general theme, and each song is interesting in its own way. A few songs might sound similar to the untrained ear, but overall, the album is enjoyable to listen to and is worth recommending.
