To put it lightly, this movie was a poor excuse to waste money and time and anyone who was involved with creating this monstrosity should be disappointed and ashamed. To all readers, no it is not worth watching this movie and especially not spending the extra money to see it in theaters.
Plot and concept-wise, the creators completely lacked originality. The idea of someone getting way too in over their head and accidentally creating a killer robot or haunted doll has been done a thousand times before. Unfortunately “M3GAN"’s execution was poor, cheesy dialogue, bad story development, and annoying main characters. Competitive killer robot horror films, Anabelle for instance, significantly surpass M3GAN leaving her in the dust.
The story of “M3GAN” follows a young girl, Lydia, whose family suffers a horrific accident and she ends up in the home of her not very maternal aunt, Gemma. In an attempt to cheer up Lydia, Gemma builds M3GAN, a life-sized doll designed to act as a friend and teach important life lessons. Eventually M3GAN gains a violent instinct, and begins killing people and wreaking havoc on the town.
As far as visual design, “M3GAN” is definitely unsettling to look at. Still, any viewer who may have been scared in the slightest was quickly distracted by the comically out-of-place musical numbers where M3GAN breaks out in song. A faint hint that the writer meant these to be sweet moments shared between M3GAN and Lydia, these song interludes come across as distractions in an already thin plot, leaving viewers confused and quite frankly bemused at the freakishness of a killer doll belting out Titanium by David Guetta ft Sia.
To conclude, the experience of “M3GAN” is definitely one that can be avoided. Because even surrounded by your closest friends and copious amounts of popcorn, the movie still sucked.
