The stakes are high this year for Halloween costumes: deciding what to wear, comparing your outfit to what other people are wearing, and executing the costume properly. Students and teachers in the school have several clear opinions on how pop culture will affect the costumes this October 31st.
First, starting with what events are going to most likely impact the costumes this year, many of them have to do with recent film productions. The release of the movie Barbie this past summer has plenty of iconic costumes featured in the film such as Roller Skate Barbie, Jumpsuit Barbie, Cowgirl Barbie, and Disco Barbie. Even just wearing the color pink could equate to a Barbie Halloween costume.
But let's not forget the Kens of the world as you can bet on seeing the infamous “I Am Kenough” sweatshirt, or Ken’s well-known Mojo Dojo Casa House outfit complete with his faux fur coat, this year. Gallatin High School junior, Sofia Cowell, states in an interview, “Barbie would’ve been the most popular [costume] because the movie just came out and everyone is talking about it.” Cowell also mentions in the interview that the impact does not end there. As many are aware, “We [did the] Barbie theme for our HOCO game,” showing how the effects of Barbie were already present in our school.
Rachel Tilton, a teacher in Gallatin High School, mentions how the “Oppenheimer” movie release will have a big impact this year. However, Tilton already has her costume planned out and instead of Oppenhemier, she is going as Adam Sandler. She ultimately chose this outfit for “It's an easy costume, it’s cheap, and it's a comfy fit,” all around a funny and practical costume.
Other pop culture outfits this Halloween could include Ariel from the live action “The Little Mermaid,” Jigsaw from “Saw X,” Wednesday Addams from the TV show “Wednesday,” and Pink Lady from “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.” All of these TV shows and movie costumes show that there is a clear impact that filmmaking will have on costumes this year.
Even if you don’t plan on re-creating any of these iconic costumes this year, classics are always a great idea to fall back on. Whether that be a group costume with the Mystery Gang from “Scooby Doo” or supervillain costumes like Harley Quinn and the Joker, you still have time to plan a killer costume with your friends and make this Halloween memorable.
