Gallatin High School is home to over thirty clubs stretching from active competitions, to local community work, to fun games, to play during lunch. Being one of the major clubs at Gallatin, HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is a great way to connect with your community, gain leadership skills, and become educated in the medical field. In the interview with HOSA’s officers, Mckenna Matson, Jack Weide, and Claire Rutherford, Matson stated “A big part of this too is student leadership and taking action for yourself.” HOSA is known to host events such as the blood drive, certify students regarding CPR and first aid and give opportunities for community service hours. Forging healthcare professionals is the main focus of HOSA while inspiring students to take on medical jobs that are otherwise unseen or unheard of. This opens doors for members to seek out future employment opportunities and to find hobbies and activities they love.
HOSA members meet the first and third Tuesdays of the month in room B133, the BIOMED room, and have monthly guest speakers come in to talk about how students can get involved with the medical field and the journey through it. Many fun activities take place as well, for example, during the holiday season they show movies. The meetings are structured by HOSA’s officers as they take on the brute of the responsibility in the club, Rutherford says, “We are planning what our meetings look like, planning out of school events, and we are the ones talking to all the members and trying to advertise our club.”
The Competitive Events Program is a once-a-year event where members get to choose an event to study, learn the skills in the event, and present them in a competitive competition to try and place in the conference. As their website says, “With six categories of competitive events (Health Science, Health Professions, Emergency Preparedness, Leadership, Teamwork, and Recognition,) HOSA has a competitive event for everyone!” Joining HOSA is a great way to make new friends, find future career choices, and build teamwork skills.
