Practice

Practicing is a necessary component of learning any instrument. Research in recent years has shown that focused practice is more effective than simply assigning a certain number of minutes to play. The practice sheets at Whittier Elementary reflect this by focusing student practice on goals. Practice sheets and goals will be assigned every Tuesday. The goals will remain the same for the whole week and signed sheets are due the next Tuesday.

Instructions for practice sheets:

  • Students will fill out the goals portion in class.
  • Students practice at home for the week.
  • At the end of the week, they rank each goal by the following system: "4" I have mastered this concept and don't need any help. "3" I still make a few minor mistakes. "2" I make several mistakes, but I understand what I need to do in order to improve. "1" I am not able to accomplish this goal without a lot of extra help.
  • Students will practice something "for fun" and write and grade their own goals.
  • If there are questions/comments for Mrs. Herdina about this week's practice, there is room for that at the bottom of the sheet.
  • Parents must sign the practice sheets in order to be accepted by Mrs. Herdina.
  • Weekly goals will be posted on this website. An extra form will always be available here.
