Our district welcomes all children and families without regard to their faith, ethnicity, gender, and national origin. Teaching and caring for children is what we do and we aim to serve and educate our children with dignity, respect, and equity. It is our belief that our schools need to provide a safe and civil environment for all students.
The School Board has a clear policy regarding equal access to education opportunities, free from discrimination and harassment. Board Policy #3210 states, “The District will make equal educational opportunities available for all students without regard to race, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or political beliefs.” Further, this policy states the District will not tolerate hostile or abusive treatment, derogatory remarks, or acts of violence against students, staff, or volunteers.
Teachers and administrators work diligently each day to foster a positive community and respect in their school environments. We have implemented several research-based programs which have proven to be effective in reducing bullying-type behavior by fostering a sense of belonging and community among students and staff. In classrooms, our teachers facilitate respectful discussions around many issues related to the curriculum. Your child’s teacher and/or school administrator can answer any questions you may have about the programs and activities in your child’s school.

The SROs all take courses put on by NASRO - National Association of School Resource Officers. When they first come on, they take SRO-Basic. There is also a SRO-Advanced course that they take, in addition to on-going training by the BPD. They also participate in relevant district trainings (like TBRI - Trust-Based Relational Intervention) and other relevant training that NASRO and other organizations put on, like Adolescent Mental Health.
SRO Basic - 40 hrs
SRO Advanced - 24 hrs
CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) - 24 hrs
AMHT (Adolescent Mental Health Training) - 12 hrs
Child Forensic Interview - 40 hrs
In addition, before ever becoming a SRO with BPD, they need 3 years experience as a police officer. During this time, they receive almost 500 hrs at the law enforcement academy(upon being hired), in addition to numerous hours of in service training within BPD (monthly firearms training, defensive tactics, medical training, etc).
MT POST is who tracks SRO formal training. SRO Sargeant Hal Richardson has over 1150 hrs of formal POST certified training.
Our SROs
Jon Ogden - SMS, MS, LO, IR, HA
Jeremy Tankink - CJMS, ML, HY, ED, WH
Mark Van Slyke - GHS
Harlee Barbao - BHS
Hal Richardson - BHS SRO Supervisor
Organizational Chart -- I believe that we will be more effective in our focus and implementation with our new structure. We had Steve and Marilyn spread too thin. Casey will be able to assume some of Marilyn’s tasks and I will continue to focus on the community relationships that Steve has fostered over his time here in the district.
IMPACT -- Implementation of the IMPACT grant will be a focus this year and into the future. We will need to best utilize our collaborative time. We will utilize practices perfected in PLC work.
Reading Initiative: We will need to address our reading concerns that Dr. Nell brought to the table. This is a budget priority issue as we move forward. With proper implementation, this will have implications curriculum wide.
MTSS Strategies at the MS: We need to make sure we are implementing the proper intervention strategies in the middle schools so that we avoid the current wedge trajectory we are currently seeing with our current practices.
CTE Emphasis: We need to continue to address our apprenticeship programs at the middle and high schools. We need to continue to break down the barriers associated with the trade industry. We need to celebrate our kids going to Community College or Trade Schools with the same vigor we celebrate our four-year college-bound kids.
Unified District -- MT Special Olympics: Continuing on our Core Purpose “Bozeman Public Schools exist to provide an outstanding education that inspires and ensures high achievement so every student can succeed and make a difference in a rapidly changing world community.” I would like to see our District become a Unified District. I will provide additional information as we find out the specifics for BSD7 from Special Olympics Montana.
Administration Professional Development:
I will provide training for our administrators on Crucial Conversations this fall. This training will give our administrators the ability to have quality conversations when the stakes are high.
I will also provide training on F.R.I.S.K. documentation. This will give our administrators the tools necessary to provide the correct documentation for write-ups and plans for improvement.
