Chemistry Course Overview
Chemistry is a branch of science that studies the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter. Matter can be anything that has mass and occupies space, encompassing both substances we encounter in everyday life (such as water, air, and metals) and those only visible through powerful scientific instruments (such as molecules and atoms). Chemistry is referred to as the "central science" because it connects and intersects with other branches of science, such as physics, biology, geology, and environmental science. It provides the foundation for understanding the world at the molecular level and is crucial in fields like medicine, materials science, pharmacology, and biochemistry. Overall, Chemistry plays a crucial role in our understanding of the natural world and provides the foundation for developing new materials, medicines and technologies to improve our lives.
AP Environmental Science Course Overview
AP Environmental Science is a rigorous, college-level course that explores the intricate relationships between human systems and the natural world. Students engage in a multidisciplinary study that includes biology, chemistry, geology, and social sciences to understand environmental processes and issues. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and problem-solving as students analyze data, evaluate environmental policies, and consider sustainable practices. Through laboratory experiments, field studies, and research projects, learners develop a comprehensive understanding of how various factors impact ecosystems and the importance of preserving biodiversity. This course not only prepares students for the AP exam, which can lead to college credit, but also equips them with the knowledge and skills to address pressing environmental challenges in their communities and beyond.
About Me
This is my 16th year in teaching and as a Chemistry teacher. I graduated from Clemson University with a BS in Microbiology and an MS in Forest Resources with an emphasis in Microbiology. We moved to Richmond Hill in 2007 and this is when I decided to make a career change to teaching. Before teaching, I was an Environmental Health Specialist in NC. I enjoy being outside either boating and fishing, gardening or just relaxing at the beach.
