Below the Surface explores the death of an orphaned orca calf, Ti-Tahlequah, and the mourning displayed by her family via the dual lenses of science (decomposition and recycling of nutrients) and emotion (ritual, grieving, and memory). Is there room for both science and emotion in our understanding of the inner lives of animals?
