The Third Fall

Genevieve Allotey-Pappoe is an Assistant Professor of Music at Brown, and she accompanied me to check out the piano at the start of the fall semester. She had seen it for the first time on August 6th this year and was surprised to see how much had changed since then.
"This is its third fall," she remarked, after asking how long it had been outside. We counted the seasons: three springs, three summers, three falls, and now an approaching fourth winter. Between broken strings, stuck keys, and damaged hammers, most of the notes on the keyboard no longer sound, but Genevieve was still able to find a few here and there that responded with a surprisingly resonant pitch.
